Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Warriors outlast No. 22 Menlo

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Following Wednesday's matchup with the division one UC Davis Aggies, the William Jessup women's basketball team responded with a 70-59 win on their homecourt against conference rival and nationally-ranked Menlo Saturday evening.

Jessup (10-4, 3-0 GSAC) outplayed No. 22 Menlo (6-6, 2-1 GSAC) thanks to strong play from both the starters and reserves. In the absence of junior guard Aycee Willis and her double-digit scoring average, Coach Kurt Westerndorp praised his team saying, "We received great minutes off the bench tonight with being down a starter due to injury. I thought everyone who stepped onto the court really gave us great energy."

The Warriors were able to draw fouls early on, finding themselves in a one-and-one situation just 2:06 into the game. JoeLyn Stirton took advantage of the foul situation going 8-8 from the line and finding herself with 11 points by the end of the first quarter. Point guard Liz Gehweiler ended the quarter with a buzzer-beating three pointer to lift the Warriors to a 26-24 lead.

The Oaks began the second period in an extended 2-3 zone defense in an effort to distort the Warriors' offensive rhythm. Menlo grabbed the lead 32-31. Still, this was a special night for Gehweiler as she led the Warriors on a 13-0 run, propelling them ahead 44-32 heading into halftime. She finished the half with 15 points and four assists and either scored or assisted on all but three points during the run.

While the Warriors struggled offensively in the third period only posting 10 points, their defense held Menlo to just 11. Jessup held a 54-43 lead going into the final frame.

Center Miranda Zaragoza scored two layups to begin the 4th as the Warriors continued to command the lead throughout the final period. Gehweiler sealed the game with a no-look pass to Zaragoza with just minutes left as the Warriors prevailed down the stretch to win 70-59.

Gehweiler finished with an impressive 18 points, 10 assists, and four rebounds. Zaragoza also contributed her own double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. After a red-hot first quarter, Stirton finished with 15 points and tied her career-high with 12 rebounds. Another bright spot for the Warriors was Elizabeth Roark who posted a season-high 10 points on 3-6 shooting with a pair of three's off the bench.

Westerndorp notes that the effort was prevalent from start to finish, "Tonight was big for us to get our second top-25 win on the season. Our players were locked in during practice yesterday and did an awesome job of transferring that focus to a great 40 minutes on the court."

The Warriors will have tough conference competition coming up and Westerndorp is ready to see his team's response, "Next week we play the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the nation. It's going to be a great challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing how we rise to those challenges."

The Warriors will look to continue their solid play in GSAC action Thursday night at home against The Masters who are undefeated. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
