Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Warriors battle against No. 3 team in the country

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The William Jessup Women's basketball team rode a three-game winning streak into Thursday night's match-up, but couldn't keep it alive as they fell to the No. 3 ranked The Master's 70-55.

Jessup (10-5, GSAC 3-1) battled throughout the game with The Master's (17-0, GSAC 5-0) but had a hard time defending 6'6 center Stephanie Soares. Head coach Kurt Westendorp said, "Soares did a nice job tonight getting to the rim. She's an amazing player and we need to be more creative in our plans to slow her down."

The Mustangs grabbed an early 9-2 lead, but Warriors center Miranda Zaragoza responded with the first three-pointer of her collegiate career on a broken possession to cut the lead to three. The Mustangs continued to pull ahead ending the period on a 14-5 run.

The story of the second quarter was the stellar play of Elizabeth Roark who kept her hot hand from the previous game against Menlo, scoring nine points. Thanks to her efforts and solid team defense, the Warriors outscored the Mustangs 18-15. They headed into halftime down by just 10.

Jessup's JoeLyn Stirton came out of the locker room hot, netting two three-pointers within the first five minutes to keep the game within reach. After falling behind 50-34, Creonah Bryant went on a run of her own scoring four straight points off of assists from Zaragoza and Liz Gehweiler. After more back-and-forth action, the quarter ended with a buzzer-beating three-pointer for the Mustangs, giving them a 58-42 lead.

In the final frame, TMU continued knocking down shots and gained a 19-point advantage with 7:05 to play. The Warriors continued to fight as Stirton drained her fourth three-pointer of the night to cut the lead to 63-47 with 6:37 remaining. In the end, the Mustangs prevailed 70-55.

Bryant was a standout for the Warriors, scoring all 10 of her points in the second half. The Warriors also received strong efforts from Zaragoza and Stirton as they both poured in 14 points apiece. Jessup also held the Mustangs under their season average of 79.3 points per game. Coach Westendorp applauded his team's effort, but noted the importance of starting strong, "We did a nice job tonight responding to their opening run, but we can't be in that deep of a hole against a team this talented."

Westendorp is optimistic heading into Saturday's match-up against the No. 4 team in the nation saying, "While this is an opportunity lost, I believe we have what it takes to compete with the best in our league."

The Warriors will continue GSAC play on Saturday as they host Westmont. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
