Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Jessup comeback effort falls short at No. 4 Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After battling the first-place team in the GSAC, Jessup's comeback effort fell short at No. 4 Westmont Thursday night. Jessup came into the contest on a two-game win-streak, but couldn't keep it going as they lost 88-73.

Coach Lance Von Vogt commented on his team's opponent saying, "Westmont is an excellent team and tonight I thought they showed why they are good enough to make a run at the national tournament."

While Jessup (16-8, 8-4) controlled the boards out-rebounding the home team 45-30, it was 21 turnovers that led to 31 Westmont points, proving to be the difference.

Von Vogt added, "We had a lot of uncharacteristic turnovers tonight that were ultimately the difference in the game. Westmont did a great job of executing and taking care of the ball."

The road Warriors opened the game strong as Matt Lyon and Jayden DeJoseph connected on back-to-back threes within the first four minutes.

Then, Luis Medearis began to heat up from downtown, netting four triples in three-and-a-half minutes to propel Jessup ahead 28-23 with 9:54 remaining.

Von Vogt was pleased with his team's initial effort saying, "Early in the game we executed well offensively. Even the shots we missed were great looks. I thought we had some opportunities to place them in difficult positions defensively and early on I thought we did that. Later in the half we got away from that when Medearis got into foul trouble."

Westmont closed the half on a 29-10 run to lead 52-38 heading into the locker room.

Jessup would not lay down though, opening the second half on a 17-7 run to cut the deficit to four with 14:46 remaining. Lyon, DeJoseph, and Erik Kinnebrew all connected from beyond the arc during the run.

From there, Westmont opened up a 16-5 run to take a 75-60 advantage with 8:02 to play. Jessup wasn't able to cut the lead under double-digits again as the home team prevailed 88-73.

Matt Lyon led the Jessup scorers with 16, Medearis followed with 14, and Tarren Storey-Way added 11 off the bench.

Von Vogt appreciated the effort of Lyon saying, "I thought Matt played well and he's going to be great for us down the stretch, but defensively we struggled with Carrasco throughout the game and I believe with missing Zay (Milan) they felt they could attack us with him."

Jessup will travel to Santa Clarita for a match-up with No. 12 The Master's on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
