Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors' trio leads Jessup to big road win at Menlo

Jessup snaps their road losing skip with a dominant win at Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. - After a tough road swing a week ago, the Jessup women's basketball team bounced back nicely with a 94-73 road win over NorCal Rival Menlo Saturday night.

The Warriors used a strong first-half to grab a double-digit lead and never looked back in the final 20 minutes. The Warriors also got a huge scoring explosion from Miranda Zaragoza, Liz Gehweiler and Creonah Bryant as the trio combined for 64 points.

Coach Kurt Westendorp said winning on the road often comes down to how well your veteran players perform. "For most teams to win on the road you need your upperclassmen to step up and I thought we got great performances tonight out of players who know what it takes."

The game began as a tightly contested matchup as neither team was able to grab a substantial lead. Then at the 3:10 mark of the first quarter, Jessup went on a 9-0 run helping them take a 26-20 advantage.

While the first quarter was a balanced effort by the Warriors offensively, Bryant took over in the second, scoring 13 points to lead Jessup. The second quarter continued in the Warriors favor as they took their first double-digit lead of the night on a lay-in from Caitlin Bowman and extended their lead to 16 during the frame.

At the half, the Warriors found themselves on top 51-37 and Westendorp said his team's mentality was key to their first-half success. "We did a great job keeping an attack mentality throughout the game, and especially to finish that big first half which really helped us get into a good rhythm."

In the third, Menlo was able to cut Jessup's lead down to 10 on two occasions but the Warriors had an answer for each run the Oaks made. The quarter ended with the Warriors scoring on back-to-back possessions giving them a 68-52 lead.
The final 10 minutes proved to be a formality for Jessup as they extended their lead to 20-plus and grabbed a 21-point victory by the final buzzer.

Zaragoza led all scorers with 24 points and 16 rebounds, Gehweiler had a strong game from her point guard spot with 22 points six rebounds and four assists and Bryant added 18 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
While the trio led the charge, Aycee Willis and JoeLyn Stirton also had nice games for Jessup as Willis had 13 and Stirton added 10.

While Westendorp said he was happy with his team's performance the team still has room for improvement. "We still need to put some better games together defensively as we finish out the regular season. We've played well in spurts, but we need to put a full 40 minutes together on that end of the floor."

The Warriors will return home for their final two regular-season games in Warrior Arena starting Thursday when they host San Diego Christian at 5:30 p.m.
