Softball Closes the Long Three-Day Stretch with Another Split

Freshman Terra Goetz earns her first win of the season in the circle

| Box Score 2 REDDING, Calif. - It was the final day of the long three day, six-game stretch for the Jessup softball team as they faced two familiar opponents in Easter Oregon and Simpson early on Sunday. Game one took some time for the Warrior's to come alive, but behind freshman Terra Goetz, the Warriors racked up 12 runs to take the 2-0 series over the Mountaineers, 12-4. The final game of the weekend was against the home Red Hawks and while a late push by the Warrior's to tie it up in the fifth looked promising, Simpson answered back putting up 7 in the sixth inning for the 9-3 victory.

Against the Mountaineers to start the day, the William Jessup Warriors got things moving in the first inning as Natalie Basaldua singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring starting pitcher Goetz and a double by Kayla Altheide would push another one across. The final two runs of the inning would score on a line-drive single by Shay Trent for the quick and early lead for Jessup.

A single run would hit the board in the following frame as Mehana Johns brought in the RBI with a fly ball to center field. The Mountaineers would find some momentum in the second and third inning with three runs crossing, but they would not go unanswered.

William Jessup Warriors notched four runs in the fifth inning thanks to singles by Kayla Altheide and reliever for one inning, Katie Blankenheim.

The final trio of runs would come in the top of the seventh for the Warriors.

Goetz battled for her first win of the season going five innings, allowing four hits and three runs.

William Jessup Warriors scattered 14 hits in the game.  Goetz, Altheide, Kaela Hangebrauck, and Shay Trent all collected multiple hits for the Warriors, while Goetz went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Jessup.

The Red Hawks would do it again in game two with an early lead out the gate scoring one in the first and second inning. With two runs on the board and the Warrior's struggling to get it out of the infield, but the fifth inning would bring a spark of hope.

Shay Trent would bring in the first run on an RBI-single to the lawn bringing in Taya Ruiz, while Kaela Hangebrauck would bring in the equalizer with a single to center scoring Altheide.

One more run would cross for Jessup in the last-chance inning, but a rough bottom of the sixth would be the deciding factor as the Red Hawks took it 9-3.

The Warriors will rest this coming week before heading back to the diamond to open up GSAC play in Arizona the last week of February.
