Warriors three-point shooting fuels victory over SDC

Jessup connects on 12 threes in win

ROCKLIN, Calif. - On a night where the visiting San Diego Christian Hawks put up a fight against Jessup, it was the Warriors' three-point shooting that lifted them to victory. Jessup (17-10, 9-6) made 12 three-pointers while holding SDC (6-16, 2-13) to just two as they prevailed 87-80.

Not only did the Warriors outshoot SDC from three, but they also made 11 more free-throws finishing with 19 to the Hawk's eight.

Coach Lance Von Vogt commented on his team's outside shooting and defense saying, "The three-ball has been something that's been a big weapon for us all year long. We also guarded their three-point shooting pretty well and that helped us with the win."

Jessup began the game with energy as Oliver Amajoyi slammed down his first field goal just 14 seconds in.

Isaiah Milan followed with consecutive three-point-plays and Jessup led 12-7 with 15:16 remaining in the first half.

From there, Jaylen Johnson checked in and connected on a three with 6:54 to play, giving the Warriors a six point advantage. Just over two and a half minutes later, Johnson knocked down two triples in a row to propel Jessup to a 39-27 lead.

The first half concluded with the Warriors ahead 45-36.

Jessup began the second half with an Austin Dill three-pointer followed by an Amajoyi fadeaway jumper in the paint. The home team led by 14 with 18:47 left.

Matt Lyon got in on the action from downtown as he drained two triples within two minutes and the Warriors held a 67-54 advantage at the 11:16 mark.

Despite a 23-13 Hawks run that brought them within three points with 1:33 remaining, Jessup was able to close by netting five free throws and picked up the 87-80 win.

San Diego native Milan led all scorers with 27, Dill provided 14, and Johnson also added 14 on 4-6 shooting from three.

Von Vogt spoke to SDC's effort and how his team responded saying, "I have a lot of respect for what San Diego Christian did tonight and for the way we dug it out. I was really happy that it was that competitive of a game because it gave us a good look and we're going to see a team that will be up in us for 40 minutes on Saturday. It's a must win situation for us if we want to make the national tournament."

The Warriors will host Vanguard on Saturday in their last regular-season home game. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
