Amajoyi seals senior day victory over Vanguard

Game-winning layup comes with three seconds remaining

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Senior day needed an extra five minutes to reach a conclusion as just the first overtime home game of the season saw the Warriors (18-10, 10-6) prevail 83-82 over the Lions (13-15, 6-10). Jayden DeJoseph found Oliver Amajoyi behind the defense and he laid it in with three seconds remaining to down the Lions.

Coach Lance Von Vogt commented on the hard work that went into making the winning layup a reality saying, "That wasn't a play that happened today, that's a play that's happened over three years of working with this man [Amajoyi]. We got a thing called the Big Man Breakfast Club where they get up at seven o'clock in the morning and come meet so we can work on their skill set."

Isaiah Milan started out in a rhythm early as he connected on two layups. Amajoyi followed with a one-handed slam, yet Jessup trailed 13-10 five minutes into the game.

With Jessup behind 22-17, Matt Lyon pulled up for a three at the top of the key, banking it in plus the foul. He completed the four-point play at the free-throw line pulling the Warriors within one, 22-21 with 5:53 to play in the first half.

From there, Vanguard outscored Jessup 10-6 and held a 32-27 advantage heading into halftime.

Similar to their previous match-up against Vanguard where Jessup outscored the Lions 65-39 in the second half, the Warriors again opened up a big run in the second half to take the lead.

DeJoseph spearheaded the run, scoring all of his 18 points with four three's as Jessup led 63-55 with 7:17 remaining.

Both teams would proceed to go back-and-forth as the Lions grabbed a two-point advantage, 73-71 with just 20 seconds remaining.

With the clock ticking down, Lyon drove into the lane and dropped in a layup while being fouled to tie the score at 73. He would miss the go-ahead free throw and the game went into OT.

Jessup began the OT period with jumpers by Austin Dill and Lyon, grabbing a four-point advantage.

After the Lions answered to take the lead, Dill dropped in a layup to make the score 79-78 in favor of Jessup with 2:11 remaining.

From there, Jessup and Vanguard traded leads three times and the Lions held a one point advantage, 82-81 with 18 seconds left.

After being swung around the perimeter, the ball ended up in the hands of DeJoseph who rifled a pass down to Amajoyi for the game-winning layup and Jessup triumphed 83-82.

DeJoseph led the Warrior scorers with 18, Dill followed with 17, Luis Medearis and Lyon contributed 15, and Amajoyi rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12.

When asked what final message he wanted to leave his seniors with as they played their last game in Warrior arena, Von Vogt said, "It's very simple. I love these guys. We've learned how to get through things collectively and today was an example of winning a game together."

The Warriors will travel to Arizona for their final two games of the regular season with the first coming against Arizona Christian on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
