Warriors drop GSAC home opener to No. 14 Westmont

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - After grabbing their first win in program history last week, the Jessup women's tennis team hosted their home opener to begin the GSAC season against No. 14 Westmont and while Jessup competed well, the squad ultimately fell 7-0 Friday afternoon.

The match was a learning experience for the Warriors (1-1, 0-1) as coach Jon Toney said he saw some good things from his players. "I'm proud of how well our team competed against one of the top teams on the west coast. Us playing against the best is a great way to improve and sets a standard for us to strive towards."

In singles, freshman Karen Godinez-Ramos had a solid performance as she nearly won her first set, before ultimately losing (5-7, 1-6). Toney said her play was exemplary of the tough mindset his team will need going forward.

"Karen came within an inch of winning her first set, which would have changed the momentum of her match. She proved to herself that she is capable of winning, so gaining this match experience is vital to her development."

Melisa Hansen also had a tremendous effort in her singles match as she won her opening set, before falling in extra points (6-4, 6-7, 7-10). Toney also said Hansen's performance was one of note. "Melisa has made vast strides with her serve and her backcourt consistency. She should take this as proof that she is emerging as a key member of our lineup."

The other two singles matches for McKenzie Hawkins and Stephanie Alsman were each (6-0, 6-0) in Westmont's favor.

In doubles, the Warriors were unable to pick up a win in either match but Alsman and Godinez-Ramos did win a set before falling 6-1.

The Warriors will be back out on the court tomorrow as they'll face Marymount California at 2 p.m.
