Jessup closes out the weekend against Marymount California

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - The Jessup women's tennis team concluded it's first GSAC weekend of 2020 hosting Marymount California Saturday afternoon, and while the team continues to improve the Warriors ultimately fell 8-1.

First-year head coach Jon Toney said while the results haven't shown up in the scoring column yet, he's happy with his team's effort. "We are improving, but must be unrelenting in our effort to improve even more. The struggles we face now will help us be better in the future."

Freshman Karen Godinez-Ramos earned her first singles win of her collegiate career with scores of (6-1, 6-4). Toney said the win for her will be a huge confidence boost. "Karen showed a lot of resiliency today after falling behind 4-2 in the second set, but she stuck with it and pulled out the win. That's something she should be proud of."

McKenzie Hawkins also had a strong performance winning six of her 18 singles sets before eventually falling (6-4, 6-2). Toney said Hawkins playing the No. 1 spot is a tough task but she's been mentally tough and continued to fight. "Spectators were treated to high-quality shot-making and exciting rallies in a match that could have gone either way. It's encouraging to see McKenzie respond to the challenge of playing the best player on every team."

Stephanie Alsman played No. 2 singles losing 6-0, 6-2, and Melisa Hansen played No. 3 singles falling 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, the Warriors lost each match 6-1. Jessup will return to the court on the road at OUAZ with the first serve set for 12 p.m. Friday afternoon.
