Jessup earns first GSAC win in program history at OUAZ

SURPRISE, Ariz. - After hosting a pair of home matches to open the GSAC schedule, the Jessup women's tennis team won it's first conference match in program history beating OUAZ 5-2 Friday afternoon.

The win comes in the Warriors' (2-2, 1-2) first conference road trip of the year and first-year coach Jon Toney said the win was a special accomplishment for his team.

"The goals for our match today were playing with consistency and maintaining focus on every point, while also understanding improvement is an ongoing effort. We did a great job of executing today and that helped us pull out the victory."

The win came with record-breaking implications as Jessup had three 6-0 set wins and zero sets lost.

The team's most impressive win came from McKenzie Hawkins as she was in the number one spot winning her singles match 6-0, 6-1. Toney praised Hawkins' play of late as she's continued to improve. "McKenzie has been strong all year and continued to grow, today she won decisively and that's mainly because of her hard work on the court in practice."

Melisa Hansen who was playing in the number three spot won her singles match 6-0, 6-2, while Karen Godinez-Ramos also won 6-0, 6-1 as the team's number four. Stephanie Alsman had the most closely contested match of the day as she won 6-2, 7-5 in extra points.

In doubles, the Warriors won both matches they played in as Hawkins and Hansen won 6-3, and Alsman and Godinez-Ramos won 6-4.

The Warriors will look to continue their win streak Saturday as they'll face Arizona Christian at 9 a.m.
