Warriors show toughness at ACU

PHOENIX, Ariz. - After grabbing their first GSAC conference win in program history on Friday, the Jessup women's tennis team continued it's road trip against Arizona Christian Saturday morning as the Warriors lost 7-0.

The weekend swing was the first back-to-back matches on the road for the Warriors this season and coach Jon Toney thought his team fought well at times. "ACU is one of the more high caliber GSAC teams and while we are competing very well, we will be working hard to close the gap against formidable opponents like them in the future.

In number one singles McKenzie Hawkins had a solid performance as she responded after falling in set one to win three games before ultimately falling (6-1,6-3). Toney praised Hawkins for her effort.

"McKenzie showed her mental toughness today as she battled back in the second set before falling just short. That's the kind of effort we will need from all our girls every match in order to win in the future."

Stephanie Alsman, who played number two singles was able to win the second set before ultimately losing 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 in extra points. "Stephanie had an outstanding effort as she used some extraordinary court coverage and tenacity in an exciting down to the wire match. As she continues to progress she will begin to win matches like these."

Melisa Hansen and Karen Godinez-Ramos each lost their singles matches with scores of 6-1, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-0 respectively. The Warriors also dropped their doubles matches as Alsman and Godinez-Ramos fell 6-2, while Hawkins and Hansen lost 6-1.

The Warriors will be back on the court Friday at home when they host Hope International at 1 p.m.
