Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Late rally downs Jessup 80-77 at No. 12 TMU

ROCKLIN, Calif. After a strong first half that led to a double-digit lead, the Jessup men's basketball team fell 80-77 thanks to a late rally by the No. 12 The Master's Saturday afternoon.

Throughout the first 30 minutes of play, No. 21 Jessup (16-9, 8-5) controlled the action thanks to some sharp shooting from beyond the arc but a driving layup with 22 seconds left gave TMU the lead for good.

Coach Lance Von Vogt said that beating The Master's on the road is a tough task. "Master's has won 47 games straight in this gym before and they're pretty good. I thought we did a fantastic job for most of the game but got sped up a bit down the stretch that led us into some mistakes."

The game opened in the Mustang's favor as they took a four-point lead, but the Warriors quickly responded with a 14-0 run grabbing a 19-9 lead with 12:39 left in the half. During that run, the Warriors hit threes on four consecutive possessions as Austin Dill, Tarren Storey-Way and Erik Kinnebrew contributed to the hot shooting.

Later in the frame, TMU was able to cut Jessup's lead back down to five, before Oliver Amajoyi slammed one home and Dill hit his second three of the night pushing the lead back up to 10.

The first half proved to be an extremely effective one for Jessup, as the Warriors hit nine of their 17 attempts from three-point range.

By halftime, Jessup held an 11-point advantage at 40-29.

In the second half, the Warriors got off to a fast start with an 8-2 run that extended their lead to 16 capped off by a driving layup from Luis Medearis with 17:35 left. From there, TMU began their comeback as they gradually cut Jessup's lead to single digits at the 8:38 mark and then again with 6:45 left in the half.

In the games final five minutes, both teams traded baskets as Jessup led by four with 2:46 remaining. Then TMU went on a 6-0 run giving themselves their first lead of the half at 76-74.

Luis Medearis responded for Jessup with a pull-up three that put Jessup back in front with 41 seconds left. But that basket proved to be the last for the Warriors as the Master's scored the final four points of the game, winning by three.

Von Vogt added "I would have liked for us to have splashed the ball back for a few more threes in the second half with how well we were shooting it today. But (Tim) Soares did a great job defensively at the rim."

The Warriors offense was led by Dill who scored 20, followed by Medearis' 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Kinnebrew led all bench scorers with 11 points on 3-for-3 beyond the arc.

Two positive stats for the Warriors was that Jessup scored 15 points off Mustang turnovers, and outscored TMU's bench 20-6.

Jessup will look to rebound Saturday night when they travel to face NorCal rival Menlo at 7:30 p.m.

Von Vogt also said he expects the loss will be a great motivation tool for his team to come back strong next week. "We will continue to work hard and this game will be something we can draw upon down the stretch."
