Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Fourth quarter rally downs Jessup 74-66 at No. 4 Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif - After winning five-consecutive games, the Jessup women's basketball team's win streak came to an end as they fell 74-66 to No. 4 ranked Westmont Thursday night.

In the two teams' first meeting, Jessup (15-8, 8-4) grabbed an early lead but a big second half pushed Westmont past Jessup, and Thursday was a similar story as Jessup held a narrow lead at halftime, but a fourth-quarter shooting drought proved to be the difference.

Coach Kurt Westendorp said he was proud of his team's effort even though they didn't get the result they wanted. "This is the toughest road trip any team in the NAIA has to make. I'm proud of our effort and the way we played tonight."

In the opening quarter, neither team was able to gain much of a lead as they traded baskets throughout. At the midway point of the frame Westmont led by three, but in the final minute, three-pointers from Elizabeth Roark and Juliette Caughey helped Jessup grab a 19-16 advantage.

The second quarter proved the game would be a nip-and-tuck battle as neither team had a sustained offensive run. Jessup opened the frame taking a five-point lead on a Creonah Bryant three, and then Miranda Zaragoza scored at the 8:02 mark pushing the advantage up to eight. But Westmont responded nicely cutting the lead down to one at 34-33 with 2:29 left and at halftime, the Warriors were up 37-35.

The third frame was another close one as Jessup took a four-point lead early on, but Westmont responded taking a two-point lead at 45-43 with 5:26 left. Then both teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter as both teams were tied heading to the final frame.

In the fourth Jessup was held to just twelve points as Westmont scored 20 and eventually pulled away with the victory.

The Warriors were led by Zaragoza's 16 points and 12 rebounds, Aycee Willis who scored 14, and Bryant who added 13.

Westendorp said while his team did well defensively most of the game. The fourth quarter was where their mistakes showed up. "It's difficult to keep Westmont off the three-point line for an entire game. They did a great job down the stretch moving the ball late in the shot clock to get clean looks."

Westendorp also lauded Westmont's late-game execution. "Down the stretch, we weren't as efficient as we had been for most of the game. Westmont did a great job closing out the game on both ends of the court."

The Warriors will be looking to rebound with a win as they'll face another top-25 opponent Saturday when they travel to No. 3 The Master's, tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
