Warriors conclude weekend against No. 3 The Master’s

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Jessup women's basketball team faced their second top-five opponent this week on Saturday, falling to No. 3 The Master's 75-45.

In their first match-up, the Warriors (15-9, 8-5) kept the outcome in reach but the Mustangs refused to relinquish the lead. Saturday's game was similar as The Master's would never trail after falling behind early 3-2.

Coach Kurt Westendorp commended his opponent saying, "Today we ran into the best team in the country who was really on top of their game, especially on the defensive end. They gave us fits and deserve the credit."

Early in the opening quarter, Liz Gehweiler provided Jessup with their only lead of the night on a three-pointer assisted by Aycee Willis. The Mustangs would then embark on a 11-0 run, but JoeLyn Stirton curbed their momentum with a three with 3:37 remaining in the quarter. The Master's led 15-8 heading into the second period.

Miranda Zaragoza found her first points of the night on a layup assisted by Juliette Caughey to begin the second quarter scoring for the Warriors. Elizabeth Roark connected on a three off an assist from Jaqueline Magana at the 6:14 mark. Still, The Master's led 23-15.

The home team closed the half on a 15-7 run and held a 38-22 advantage heading into halftime.

After the Mustangs pulled ahead by 20, Gehweiler found the bottom of the net on consecutive threes to cut the lead to 16 with 7:08 remaining. From there, The Master's finished the quarter outscoring the Warriors 13-8 to take a 57-36 advantage into the final quarter.

The fourth period proved to be more of the same as the home team doubled-up the Warriors in the quarter 18-9 to win 75-45.

A bright spot for the Warriors came from the bench as they outscored the home team 16-13 led by Stirton's seven points. Gehweiler led the Jessup scorers with 10, Roark followed with eight, and Creonah Bryant added seven.

Westendorp commented on his team's spirit as they finished up one of the toughest road swings in the NAIA, "Overall on this trip our team had a great mindset and competed extremely hard. We need to keep that foundation and eliminate the mistakes we made to give ourselves the best chance to win in the conference tournament in March."

Jessup will have a week to regroup as they will face off against Menlo on the road next Saturday. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
