High-scoring Day Split Between Warriors and Mustangs

Duran’s two home runs spark the Warriors offense

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Jessup baseball hit the road to Santa Clarita with high spirits coming off of a series win. The Warriors looked to continue that momentum as they took on The Master's University Mustangs. The Warriors were 9-18 against the Mustangs historically heading into the series. It was a slow start at the plate but the Warriors were able to come alive in game two and split the Friday doubleheader. The Warriors move to 17-10 overall, 6-6 in conference.

Game 1: Master's 16, Jessup 4

The Mustangs took an early lead with eight runs in the first two innings. Mike Shoenberger got the Warriors on the board with an RBI single to right field in the top of the third. Kawaiola Takemura followed it up with a bases-loaded three-RBI double, 8-4. The Mustangs tacked a few more on the board and the Warriors fell, 16-4.

"We didn't come out ready to play game one, and that's the type of result that can happen against a good team," Trevor Paine, head coach of the Warriors, explained.

Game 2: Jessup 11, Master's 9

Game two saw the Mustangs take the early lead again, but Jessup answered in the top of the third with an Anders Green RBI single, 1-1. The Warriors bats began to heat up in the top of the fourth when Jesus Duran homered to left field, 2-1. The Mustangs were able to answer with one run, but Jessup kept the pressure up.

In the top of the fifth, Green hit a three-run homer to left field, as Jacob Gribbin added two more with a single up the middle and Connor Braun hit an RBI double to give for an 8-2 advantage. Then, in the top of the sixth, Duran hit his second bomb of the game, a two-RBI homer,10-3. The Mustangs closed the gap in the bottom of the six with three runs. Jessup answered when Shoenberger reached on an error by the Mustangs which allowed Gribbin to score, 11-6. In the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs posted three more, but it wouldn't be enough as the Warriors prevailed, 11-9.

Ricardo Torres, Jr started on the mound for the Warriors and earned his third win of the season in five and two-thirds innings. Torres gave up seven hits, six runs, and four walks while earning two strikeouts. In the bottom of the sixth, Brett Wetteland took over and closed the game.

"I was happy with how we responded in game two. It was big to even that series up," Paine said at the conclusion of the day. "We did an especially good job of continuing to grind out at bats and add runs on a day where the yard was playing small."

The Warriors had 20 hits on the day with 15 runs and 14 RBIs. Gribbin (3-6) and Joseph Luevano (2-4) led the Warriors in plate appearances. Green led the Warriors with four RBIs while Takemura and Duran each had three apiece.

Looking forward, Paine elaborated that the Warriors "need some guys to step up on the mound" in order to win the series.

The Warriors and Mustangs return to Reese Field for another doubleheader on Saturday, March 7th, before the Warriors meet San Diego Christian College for a four-game series back at McBean Park on March 13th and 14th.
