Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Engelage

Warriors Hang On To Win Nail-Biter Over Simpson

ROCKLIN, Calif.— The Warriors took on the Simpson Red Hawks for the second time in less than a week and in almost identical fashion Jessup escaped with a two-point win, 79-77. In a game that featured runs by both teams a last-ditch effort by the Red Hawks fell short and the Warriors hung on for the win.

After the game head coach Lance Von Vogt shared his thoughts saying, "I thought we brought good energy tonight but lacked execution at various times."

The game started off in favor of the Warriors as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead after a Tarren Storey-Way dunk. For the majority of the half, the Warriors were in control leading by double-digits at various times. With seconds remaining on the clock, Malik Corey carved up the defense as he converted on a smooth finish giving the Warriors a fifteen-point lead. However, Christian Alvis Labadie of the Red Hawks made a half-court shot at the buzzer, and the Warriors led 48-36 entering the second half.

On a routine basis, the Warriors showcased terrific ball movement and with twelve minutes left in the half, Marcus Hansen found a wide-open Jayden DeJoseph as they connected for a three-point bucket. The shot gave the Warriors their largest lead of the game with the score at 65-47.

The Red Hawks were quick to respond and put together a 15-2 scoring run to get within five points as the score was 67-62 with six minutes left. Down the stretch, Simpson kept hope alive with timely buckets but ultimately Jessup was able to retain the lead for the duration.

Jessup held a two-point lead with 19 seconds left and in a similar fashion as the previous matchup, turned the ball over. The Red Hawks then had a chance to hit a go-ahead shot but missed a three-pointer and Malik Corey snagged a key rebound to ice the game.

Throughout the game Myles Corey was electric scoring the ball as he led the team with 26 points, knocking down five three-pointers. Tarren Storey-Way was also in double-figures as he recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Jayden DeJoseph shot the lights out as we went five of six from downtown ending with 16 points.

The Warriors are scheduled to tip-off GSAC play next week on Friday and Saturday at home against Life Pacific.
