ROCKLIN, Calif. – After a loss on Saturday to open Jessup's new turf soccer field, the Warriors were back in action Thursday as they looked to bounce back. Taking on the San Diego Christian Hawks, and a familiar face, the Warriors would finish on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat.
Allowing early goals has become a rather unfortunate trend for the Warriors in their GSAC season. That trend continued on Thursday as it took the Hawks just seven minutes to find the back of the net.
Starting in goal for the Warriors on Thursday was
Juan Negrete. The start was the first of his collegiate career, and he would tally three saves.
One of Negrete's best saves came against a penalty kick. Attempting the penalty for the Hawks was none other than Jessup's all-time leading scorer,
Paul Anderson. Anderson's shot was denied, but on the rebound attempt, Anderson would find the net to set the score at 2-0.
Anderson would score again late in the first half, putting his new side ahead 3-0.
Head Coach
Greg Lazaga spoke on the Warriors' first-half play, stating, "We gave up some gift goals to (San Diego). We will continue to work on the details to prevent those. However, we had large stretches of good play."
The Warriors would finally crack the scoreboard after suffering shutout losses in their last three matches, as
Josh Freeman netted his first goal of the season in the 74
th minute. The goal sparked life into the Jessup bench, as the Warriors played a stronger second half than their earlier 45.
Lazaga added on the second-half performance, stating, "Once we trusted each other and moved, the ball play started to turn, and we were able to put some pressure on their backline and goal. We are so young that good stretches like that are really valuable."
SDCC would get a fourth goal with just over ten minutes left in the match after a Jessup player deflected a corner kick in.
Replacing Negrete in goal for the final 20 minutes Thursday was freshman
Nick Forry. Forry, making his collegiate debut, recorded one save.
The Warriors will continue searching for their first win on the turf this Saturday when Vanguard comes to town. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
