SURPRISE, Ariz. – It was a difficult day at the office Saturday as the Warriors took on the No. 17 ranked OUAZ Spirit. Looking to regroup from a loss in Glendale Thursday afternoon, Jessup struggled from the start Saturday in Surprise as they fell in the finale of their Arizona road trip, 8-0.
Head Coach
Greg Lazaga spoke after the match, and stated, "We came out not ready to play today. Too many unforced errors that had us defending our own goal. Ottawa is too good for that type of opening."
OUAZ got on the board quick Saturday, as after four corner kicks in just the first four minutes, the Spirit would find the net in the sixth. Less than 60 seconds later, the Spirit were back at it again as a scramble in the box denied the first chance, but a rebound attempt set the score at 2-0.
An attempt to clear the ball out of their defensive third backfired in the ninth minute, as OUAZ scored again. Ten minutes later, a high bounce on an OUAZ throw-in allowed the ball to hop over a Jessup defender and find the foot of a Spirit attacker who set the score at 4-0.
The Spirit would add three more goals in the opening 45-minutes, sending the Warriors into the halftime break trailing 7-0.
Lazaga said of the slow start, "We have to find a way to get off to better starts. I was much more pleased with the second half. The ball started to move and some players found some positive actions.
Donovan Carrillo and
Josh Freeman really pushed hard to get us in the right direction. Need to find that from the start from all eleven on the field."
OUAZ would score an additional goal in the 52nd minute as Jamaine Turner wrapped up a hat trick performance.
Robert Sams recorded two saves in 45 minutes of action.
Valentin Luna and
Juan Negrete split the final 45 minutes in goal. They combined for three saves.
Saturday's loss drops the Warriors to 1-8-0 (0-2-0 GSAC) on the season. There are still six matches remaining for the Warriors to turn things around.
The Warriors will need to quickly wipe Saturday's contest from their memory as they have a week to prepare for their next GSAC contest against Menlo College. Next Saturday the Warriors will host the Oaks at 1:30 p.m. in the first ever men's soccer contest to take part on Jessup's brand-new turf soccer field.
