Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matthew Horrocks

Warriors Open the Turf Field with a Loss Against Menlo College

Jessup will look to get their first conference win of the season when they take on San Diego Christian next Thursday

ROCKLIN, Calif. – After months of anticipation, the wait for the Warriors ended on Saturday as the team played on their brand-new turf field for the first time. In town was GSAC opponent Menlo College, and it was the Oaks who took home the first men's soccer win on the turf, 4-0.

After the match, Head Coach Greg Lazaga stated, "We gave up a goal in the first ten minutes again today. We have to find a way out of that as we are too often chasing the game early."

The opening strike for Menlo came in the ninth minute after Evan Snodgrass found the back of the net from 15 yards out. Goalkeeper Valentin Luna made a save on Menlo's first chance, but the ball bounced right to Snodgrass for the opening strike.

In the 22nd minute, JP Mendoza put the Oaks ahead 2-0 with his headed goal. Mendoza headed the ball on frame off a corner, but it hit the post, and once again, Menlo placed the rebound attempt beyond the goal line.

Mattia Celant set the score at 3-0 just two minutes into the second half as he banked the ball off the right post. Levin Ledrgerber would score the final tally of the day in the 84th minute.

The Warriors used Saturday as an opportunity to try new lineups and formations. Unfortunately for the Jessup squad, they would have to play a man down for nearly an hour after Marcus Tovar was issued a red card.

Lazaga spoke about the change in formation, stating, "We played some young guys in brand new positions today. I thought Paolo Ionescu and Ruben Vazquez had some really good moments in the backline."

Luna played all 90 minutes in goal for the Warriors. He recorded four saves.

Jessup will get a chance to get their first GSAC win of the season when they take the field on Thursday against San Diego Christian College. The Hawks will be in town for a 4 p.m. kickoff on the turf field.
