GLENDALE, Ariz. – With a bad taste in their mouth leftover from a loss Friday night in Surprise, the Warriors hit the road for Glendale on Saturday to wrap up this two-match Arizona trip. Any memory of defeat was quickly wiped away as the Warriors dominated Saturday's three-set victory over Arizona Christian.
The win Saturday pushes the Warriors to 8-4 in conference play, which has them currently sitting in third place behind OUAZ and Westmont.
Saturday's opening set was a real seesaw battle, as after the Warriors looked to have gained control up 9-7, the Firestorm quickly charged back to score six of the following seven points. The Warriors did not waver, as back-to-back kills from
Madalyn Miller and
Mary Padilla, followed by a
Taylor Dilley ace, cut the deficit to just two.
The Warriors retook control of the set with an 8-2 in the closing stretches, leading them to a 25-23 victory to start the day.
Set two was all Warriors, as they carried over that momentum from set one, leading to an 8-1 run that had the Warriors leading 15-7. ACU would never get within eight points of the Warriors again in this set, as the Warriors cruised to a 2-0 lead, backed by a 25-16 second set performance.
The third set of Saturday's battle was a return to how the match started, as both sides traded points, leading up to a 12-12 tie. The Warriors were then aided by three consecutive mistakes by their opponents, as the Firestorm could not connect, and three attack errors had the Warriors sitting ahead 15-12.
ACU tried to regroup with a timeout but kills from Miller and
Taylor Tarble quickly pushed the lead to five. Jessup closed the set on an 8-0 run, powered by two kills from Tarble and Padilla, as the Warriors closed out the win in a speedy fashion.
Padilla ended the night leading the Warriors with 12 kills, adding eight digs to her performance as well. Gunter was just behind her, as she tallied eight kills in the win, while Dilley closed with seven.
Setters
Ella Hartford and
Mallory Pazin contributed 18 and 15 assists, respectively.
Lauren Toon padded the box score with 21 digs.
The Warriors now get to return home for two matches next week, as the schedule winds down with contests against Vanguard and Westmont. Friday's match with Vanguard will be the annual Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness match. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the 5 p.m. match.
