Warriors Drop Season's Penultimate Match in Four Sets

Several players stepped up in the absence of Taylor Dilley; Season ends tomorrow at Hope International

SAN DIMAS, Calif. - The final road trip of the season started at Life Pacific for a battle of the Warriors on Friday night. The home team reigned in the 3-1 advantage, but it was a record-setting night for some Jessup Warriors as the kills and digs column dominated.

"The girls played great," said head coach Tiger Shelton. "There was a little bit of a misfire due to the fact that we were missing Taylor Dilly tonight, but we quickly overcame it."

Off to a slow start, the Jessup Warriors battled back in the first set to tie it up 5-5 and took the lead on a 4-0 run. It would continue to go back and forth between the two Warriors as the opening set wasn't decided until the late run by Life Pacific to take it 25-19.

But it was the Jessup Warriors who bounced back strong in the second set as they led 11-5 early, but a 5-0 advantage for Life Pacific down the stretch tied it 20 all with just five points deciding the fate of the set.  The Warrior would go up 22-20, led by a service ace from Mallory Pazin, and a block from Taylor Tarble would give Jessup match point to even the score one-set all.

The final two sets would mirror the start as both teams exchanged points through the first half of the set, but the hometown Warriors would take the third set 25-19 and the final set down the stretch 25-21.

While Jessup fell 1-3, starting freshman Madalyn Miller would have a record-setting night with 22 kills of her own leading the Warriors, followed by Mary Padilla with 15 kills, her sixth-straight double-digit kills game. Padilla would also reign in the digs category with 22, right behind leading defender of the night, Lauren Toon with 26. Ella Hartford would take the lead in the assist column with 21, followed by Pazin with 9.

"Maddie Miller had 22 kills. That was amazing," added Shelton. "Mary had 15 kills, and Devin Beatty played all the way around for the first time ever. I really admire the girls for how much they work and how hard they push. It's been a long season. We hope to bring home a win tomorrow."

The Jessup Warriors will finish their season on the road as they take on Hope International Saturday at 2 pm.
