ROCKLIN, Calif. – It's postseason time around the Golden State Athletic Conference, and for the first time in program history, Jessup Women's Soccer is in the GSAC Tournament. Qualifying with the fifth seed, the Warriors are on their way to Santa Clarita for their first-round matchup.
Ahead of the Warriors this weekend is the four-seed, The Master's University Mustangs. It will be the second meeting this season between the Warriors and Mustangs, as TMU previously came onto Warrior Field on October 28 and took home a 1-0 victory.
The Mustangs, much like the Warriors, feature a pair of All-GSAC team members, as Kyndel Borman and Lexi Baker were named to the all-conference team this week along with Jessup's
Lauren (McDougal) Case and
Kaylee Gillespie.
Borman will be a player for the Warriors to key on as she comes into Saturday as the team's leading scorer with six goals. Borman scored the lone goal in TMU's victory over the Warriors last Thursday.
TMU finished the conference season with a record of 5-3-0, tallying 15 points. The Warriors finished with 11 points after a 3-3-2 record in conference.
Jessup will be looking to break a string of momentum by the Mustangs, as TMU comes into Saturday riding a three-match win-streak. The Warriors are on the opposite trajectory, entering as losers in their last three, a trend the team is working to overcome as their previous two matches have been decided by just one goal.
The three-match losing skid comes on the heels of an 11 match unbeaten streak that stretched nearly two months.
The Warriors have several players of their own that opponents will have to game plan for, as Gillespie led the GSAC in goals (11) and points (26), while Case finished in the top-five for goals, assists, and points. Another player who is a threat to score is freshman
Kye Johnson, as her six goals are third on the team but match the lead for TMU.
The goalkeeping battle will feature Ariana Romero of TMU, who allowed just three goals in 740 minutes this season.
Olivia Foulk took over the starting goalkeeper job for the Warriors midway through the season. She comes into Saturday allowing just 1.01 goals/match, and features a .853 save percentage.
Jessup netted 34 goals this season, averaging 2.13 per match. The Warriors' goal total is second in the conference behind only OUAZ (37), while their goals/match average is tied with Menlo for second.
Saturday's GSAC opening round battle will take place on Reese Field, located on the campus of The Master's University. In 18 all-time appearances between Jessup and The Master's, the Warriors have never earned a victory, as they look to make history and snap their 0-15-3 record against the Mustangs.
Fans that want to watch this historic match for the program can tune into the
GSAC Network at 11 a.m. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the GSAC Semifinals in Santa Barbara next Thursday. Their opponent will be determined on the outcome of the six-seed vs. three-seed matchup.
