DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – There was no time to celebrate one of the biggest wins in program history, as 24 hours removed from taking down No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan, Jessup was back at it on Sunday. Capping off the Daytona Beach Shootout, the Warriors took down another of the nation's best, topping No. 23 Concordia (NE) 70-62.
The weekend was extra special for head coach
Lance Von Vogt, as he was able to coach this weekend in a gym filled with family and friends.
"It was super special," said Von Vogt, a Florida native. "I had my whole family here. My dad, all my sisters, my nieces, my nephews, my cousins. And then we had all of the schools that I played at. Warner Christian, Spruce Creek, and then even Atlantic High School came over to support tonight. It was a home crowd atmosphere in the gym."
It was a near-perfect start for the Warriors as they jumped ahead 11-4. A triple from
Tarren Storey-Way capped off the hot start.
An early seven-point deficit was not enough to derail the opposing Bulldogs, as they charged back into the game with a 12-2 run that put them ahead by three. The Warriors aided Concordia's efforts by going scoreless over five minutes, ending with just under five to go in the half off a
Charlie Garrison bucket.
Garrison was a force down low early in this one. On top of his rebounding, the freshman denied a Bulldog basket three times on a single possession, picking up a trio of blocks.
The Warriors only needed that one Garrison basket to get the pilot light-lit, as it sparked a 15-2 run, giving Jessup an eventual nine-point lead in the final minute of the half. At the break, the Warriors led 37-30.
"After we hadn't scored, we talked about getting down in transition," said Von Vogt. "Getting some easy buckets, just kind of playing simple. The guys did a great job of responding to that, and we played simple the remainder of the half, and we went from being down, you know, to being up seven at halftime."
Concordia once again came out swinging early in the second half as they pieced together a 10-1 run to tie the contest at 44. Storey-Way responded with another triple, giving Jessup the lead yet again. It was a lead they would never relinquish.
The late second-half advantage touched eight points with just over five to go as
Myles Corey connected on one of three from behind the arc. Concordia managed to trim the lead to four on a three of their own, but coming with 47 seconds on the clock, enough time for a comeback was not available.
Sunday's victory secured the Warriors a perfect 2-0 trip to Daytona Beach, moving their overall record on the season to 14-1. It's the fifth time in five opportunities this season that the Warriors have taken down a team receiving national votes.
Storey-Way led the scoring efforts in just his second game this season, as he finished with 19 points on 7-of-12 from the field. He also shot 3-of-8 on 3-pointers.
Right behind Storey-Way was Corey, who scored 16.
Cashemin Williams scored 12 while nearly missing a double-double, dishing out nine assists. Garrison had a team-high 11 boards to go with six points.
After two hard-fought days in Florida, the Warriors now get to enjoy two weeks off and a Christmas week free of basketball.
Von Vogt said his guys need some time off, noting, "It's Christmas time. They need to be home with their family and get a chance to take a quick break from basketball. We'll have them back for a couple of days of practice before we play UAV, which is a fantastic team on the 30
th."
Jessup takes the court next at home on December 30 when Antelope Valley visits Warrior Arena.
