ROCKLIN, Calif. – Little error can be pinpointed by the performance put forth by the nation's No. 23 ranked Warriors Thursday night. From the word go, Jessup dominated en route to the fourth-most points in program history as they defeated the visiting San Diego Christian Hawks, 107-67.
Head Coach
Lance Von Vogt said a scoring performance such as this starts down low in the paint. "I really felt like we were efficient tonight. We were able to get to the paint and then play out of that, either right at the rim or splashing it out for threes. And I think that we, you know, we shot the three very well tonight. And when you do that, that does open up the paint for the drives."
Jessup leaped out of the gates to a 24-8 run, capped off by a corner three from
Jayden DeJoseph. The triple was one of seven the Warriors would sink in the first half.
The Warriors padded their lead to 20 thanks to a layup from
Cashemin Williams, and after San Diego cut the lead to 13, Jessup pushed the lead back over 20 on a 12-0 run to end the half. The run was catapulted by threes from
Nathan Kasongo and
Jordan Adams, giving the Warriors a 52-27 halftime advantage.
Kasongo was one of many bench players who cashed in on their minutes Thursday night. Playing 19 minutes, Kasongo scored a career-high 16 points on 5-of-9 from the field.
Von Vogt spoke of the effort Kasongo has been putting in that the public does not see, adding, "Nate had a career-high tonight, and he's fantastic. He's been working hard. He's in the gym. He got an extra hour's worth of shooting up this morning. I was with him here last Saturday morning for an hour and a half extra workout. So Nate's putting in the time. It was good to see it."
Out of the halftime break, the Warriors continued what they had been doing in the first half, starting the period with a 13-4 run. The highlight play was a backcourt steal and dunk from Williams that had Warrior Arena rocking.
The Jessup lead hit 40 points for the first time all night with 6:23 to go as Kaydin Silva came off the bench and sank a corner three of his own. Silva was one of 13 players who scored for the Warriors in the victory.
"I thought tonight you didn't see a discernible drop-off when we made our substitutions," said Von Vogt on the depth of the team. "And because of that, we were able to really evenly distribute the minutes."
Jessup never attempted to get away from their game in this one, making minimal errors the entire 40 minutes as the shots kept falling. A layup with 1:05 to go from
Ty Artis was Jessup's final make, and it ties the fourth most points ever scored by the men's basketball program.
On top of the record night, it was the first 100-point performance by the Warriors since they did so 766 days ago against New Hope Christian (107-60).
Leading the record night was
Myles Corey, who scored 20 points in his 21 minutes of action.
Matthew Schmidt also closed in double-figures with 11 points.
Jessup made 42 of their 70 attempts from the field, good for a 60-percent showing. Jessup also knocked down 13 threes.
The win shows the focus this Jessup team has moving forward towards what is a very difficult schedule ahead. Jessup is just one day removed from receiving the ranking of No. 23 in the country, and Von Vogt said that their focus remains on the bigger picture.
"This team this team has been there before, and I believe that they're ready to take it up an extra notch. I thought tonight, what you saw was a team that was mature. They're not satisfied. It was a starting spot for us to get nationally ranked. And now we want to see how far we can take it, and that was the approach they took the night they valued every possession."
The next test for this Jessup squad comes quickly, as, at 2 p.m. Saturday, the Warriors will host Hope International.
