LINCOLN, Calif. - Jessup's bats were out in full force Saturday as the Warriors swept a doubleheader against Corban University. Thanks to some big innings and four home runs, the Warriors put double digits on the board in both games as they move to 4-0.
Jessup's bats came to life in game one, as the Warriors added two runs in three consecutive innings. That streak came to an end in the sixth when the Warriors batted around, sending 12 batters to the plate en route to a six-run outburst.
That six-inning barrage was capped off by a 400-plus foot home run over the batters eye in straight away center field from pinch-hitter
Max Modeste.
Shinning at the plate in game one for Jessup was
Dante Peretti. Making his Jessup debut, Peretti hit the ball hard up the middle three times as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Making another Jessup debut in game one was pitcher
Danny Chavez. Chavez did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, and that be only one of two he surrendered on the day. Earning the win, Chavez tossed six innings while surrendering just one run.
"Danny was awesome," said Head Coach
Trevor Paine. "He's as smart of a pitcher as I've ever coached.
"He pitched to contact. We made plays behind him. He was getting ahead. He pitched really efficient and was awesome for his first time out."
Leading 12-1 in the eight, Corban finally showcased their bats with a duo of homers, but it wasn't enough as Jessup took the opener 12-4.
The heat off Peretti's bat did not go away between games, as in the first inning of game two, Peretti launched a three-run home run deep over the storage unit in left field to put Jessup ahead 3-0.
"I thought (Peretti) could be an impact bat right in the heart of the order, and that's what we got today," said Paine on Peretti's debut. "The three-run home run really set the tone for us in game two."
After Corban scored two in the second, Jessup turned to small ball in the bottom half to get the runs back. With two on and nobody out, a sacrifice bunt followed by a sac fly drove in a run.
Mike Shoenberger drove in the second run with an RBI single through the right side.
Corban brought the game back within reach in the fifth after Estenio Sede sent a two-run homer down the right-field line. Needing some insurance runs, Jessup acted quickly as
Kevin Jordan Jr. launched a home run on the first pitch of the inning. Modeste hit his second homer of the day two batters later, this time a solo shot to right-center.
Jessup added three more in the fifth off a bases-loaded hit by pitch from
Kawaiola Takemura, followed by a two-run single from Shoenberger. The insurance runs were enough to push Jessup to a 10-4 victory.
"I thought it was a relatively clean day, no real complaints," Paine added as his team is now averaging 10.5 runs per game.
The doubleheader sweep pushes Jessup's record to 4-0 on the season. Corban falls to 0-6.
Jessup and Corban will hit the diamond for another doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of game one from McBean Park is scheduled for 11 a.m.
