LINCOLN, Calif. – After taking the first two of this four-game series with Corban yesterday, Jessup was back on the field for another doubleheader Saturday. Needing to rally back from a few deficits, Jessup's bats put on a show as they earned the four-game sweep.
Jessup got two runs early in game one via
Kawaiola Takemura. After coming around to score in the first, Takemura shot a ball into the gap on the right side of the infield, driving in
Mason Sherrill to give Jessup a 2-1 advantage.
The Warriors went to the bullpen early in game one, calling upon freshman
Benny May. May looked phenomenal out there, allowing no runs on just three hits in his five innings of relief. The outing earned him his first collegiate victory.
Looking for some insurance, the Warriors tacked on a run in the fifth off an RBI double from
Kevin Jordan Jr. Jordan Yu put the game out of reach in the eighth with a two-run homer to left-center, securing the 5-2 victory.
Jessup had to rally their way through game two, as Corban put Jessup in a hole with a leadoff home run. Jessup quickly got the run back when Jordan launched his first home run of the season.
A run in the third has the Warriors down one again, but an RBI single from
Mike Shoenberger evened the score before Jordan hit a ball into a tree in left-center for his second home run of the game. A two-run shot by Corban in the fifth had the Warriors in a hole yet again.
"I knew it was coming after the way he hit all fall," said Head Coach
Trevor Paine on the performance of Jordan at the plate.
"Today was a good day to hit. I don't think any wind would have kept those two (home runs) in the park."
Jessup evened the score in the fifth thanks to another RBI from Takemura, but Corban would not go away as a two-run homer had them up 6-4, entering the last of the sixth.
The rallying continued, as after
Connor Franco tied the game up at 6-6 on a two run-double,
Joseph Luevano pushed the Warriors ahead one last time on a two-run homer to right. Corban got one run in the final inning, but it was Jessup's day as they took game two 8-7.
"We've been pretty resilient all season thus far," added Paine on his team's ability to come back from any deficit.
"It all starts with getting the leadoff guy and executing. It's good to see. It's a good quality to have in a team that never gets down even when they're behind late in the game."
Another strong outing on the mound was had by
Brett Wetteland. Starting game two, Wetteland allowed just two runs in his four innings of work.
"Brett was awesome," added Paine. "We wanted to give him a change of scenery by starting him instead of bringing him out of the bullpen. You always know with Brett you're going to get strikes."
Saturday's win pushes Jessup to 6-o. Corban falls to 0-8 on the young season.
Jessup will get back to the diamond next weekend as they take on The Master's University for a four-game series in Santa Clarita. This will be a non-conference meeting.
