A Trip to the Desert Ends with a 91-58 Defeat for No.24 Jessup

Arizona Christian secure the GSAC East with the victory; Warriors will host OUAZ for the season finale next weekend

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Looking to rebound from their first conference loss of the season last night, the Warriors hit the court in Arizona part two of the weekend series at No. 5 Arizona Christian. Needing a win to keep potential conference title hopes alive, the Warriors got in too big of a hole early, as they dropped this one 91-58.

After the game, Head Coach Lance Von Vogt was very complimentary of the ACU squad, stating, "ACU is playing great basketball right now, and they are a great team.

"Coach Rutter is doing an excellent job with his guys. You can tell they've had the core of their team for a few years, and they are further along than us."

The Warriors started Saturday's game on an even note with the Firestorm, as after a putback layup from Matt Garrison, Jessup trailed 13-12.

For the remainder of the first half, it was all ACU, as a 20-2 run ensued after the Garrison basket. At the break, the Warriors found themselves in the same position as last night, needing a large comeback as they trailed 47-28.

Out of the locker room, the offense started to click for the Warriors, as in the span of four possessions, freshman Myles Corey connected on three 3-pointers. Still, ACU held a comfortable 20 point advantage.

ACU's lead would only grow as the Warriors began to rotate in players for the remainder of the game. A total of 12 Warriors saw playing time in the loss Saturday, with the Jessup bench producing 20 of the 58 points scored.

Von Vogt added that playing a team of ACU's caliber, albeit difficult, was a great learning experience for this Jessup squad.

"This was a great experience for us to compete on the road against one of the favorites for the national title," said Von Vogt. "We will watch the film and get back on the practice court so we can make the improvements we need to make so we can compete at their level of consistency."

A trio of Warriors led the team in scoring with 11 points: Garrison, Myles Corey, and Tarren Storey-Way. As a team, Jessup shot just 30.9-percent from the field.

"Days like this keep you humble and hungry because you understand there is so much more work that needs to be done," added Von Vogt. "The great thing about our guys is they are the type of guys that are humble, hungry, and willing to do the work."

Arizona Christian finished the game with five players in double-figures. Leading the way was Darius Goudeau with 16.

Saturday's loss secures a GSAC East Division championship for the Firestorm, as the Warriors' record drops to 6-2 in the GSAC. ACU are currently a perfect 8-0 in conference play, and have won nine straight.

Jessup's regular season winds down next weekend with one final series against Ottawa University (AZ). The first of back-to-back games will take place Friday at 4:30 p.m.
