SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Jessup Men's basketball team rode a wave of momentum into Saturday afternoon's matchup with The Master's, and they capitalized with a wire-to-wire victory.
Â
After
Tim Strijaous netted the winning three-pointer on Friday night, the Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead Saturday afternoon after Strijaous canned a mid-range jumper and triple. Jessup built on their early run as
Malik Corey found
Jaylen Johnson for a three, followed by Malik scoring himself on a runner in the paint. The Warriors led 14-5 with 13:02 remaining in the first half.
Â
Coach
Lance Von Vogt commented on his team's fast start, "We jumped out with great energy, and we've talked about mental toughness and not having any type of letdown. I really liked the way we came out with the defensive intensity, and this is an area that can be a real separator for us."
Â
Myles Corey proceeded to get in on the action by connecting on a three and back-to-back layups to propel Jessup ahead 21-15.
Â
Before the half, Johnson hit his second triple, and
Tarren Storey-Way converted a layup to give the Warriors a 40-27 lead.
Â
The second half was no different as Strijaous provided the energy with a fastbreak dunk less than 30 seconds in and followed it with a step-back mid-range jumper. Then,
Matt Garrison grabbed a rebound and converted a putback layup to give the Warriors a 17 point advantage, 46-29.
Â
Later on,
Myles Corey drove in and scored plus the foul. Storey-Way followed this play with consecutive fastbreak layups to put Jessup up 21.
Â
The Warriors would go on to win by 18, 76-58 as they held the Mustangs to just 35.2 percent field-goal shooting.
Â
Von Vogt complimented the Mustang's effort saying, "This great Master's team was missing a couple of players today, but the guys who replaced them were so talented that there wasn't much of a discernible dropoff. We knew that we were going to get everything we could handle from them, and we were up to the challenge."
Â
Myles Corey led the Warriors with 22 points, Storey-Way followed with 13, and
Malik Corey finished with 11.
Â
Jessup will prepare for a matchup with San Diego Christian next Thursday at home. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
