ROCKLIN, Calif. – Back on the home turf of Jessup Field for the first time since February 19, the Warriors welcomed Arizona Christian for what turned out to be a high-scoring affair. After two late goals in 60 seconds, Jessup ended the day on the wrong end of a 4-3 final.
The Warriors did not start on the right foot Thursday, as it was the left foot of
Sarah Foulk that got Jessup on the board first in the 41st minute. Taking a shot from some 30 yards out, Foulk found the upper right corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
After taking the 1-0 lead into the break, ACU quickly found an equalizer as Sarahie Torres netted a free kick in the 51st minute. Just 45 seconds later, on the receiving end of a corner kick from Foulk,
Vanessa Alonzo would put the Warriors back on top at 2-1.
Near the 80th minute, things began to spiral, as Adrianna Contreras evened the game at 2-2. In the 85th minute, Irene Ledezma put the Firestorm ahead 3-2, and she would score again less than 60 seconds later, as her second goal of the day had Jessup trailing by two.
Head Coach
David Nolan was frustrated with the second-half performance, stating, "We controlled the majority of the game, but we continued to make silly mistakes and allowed them back into the game twice."
Looking to make a late push to send the game to overtime, Jessup trimmed the deficit to one as a great pass from
Madison Leonhardt set up the first goal of the year for
Alhan Bakideh.
Jessup had one final chance to even the game, as an ACU foul gave Jessup a free-kick roughly 20 yards out with 15 seconds on the clock. Foulk stepped up for the attempt, but her shot sailed high over the crossbar, ending the late comeback bid.
Nolan added on the late push, saying, "We went for it in the end and committed a lot of numbers forward. The team's effort was there, but we just couldn't take our chances."
Thursday's loss moves the Warriors to 1-6 on the season and 0-3 in the GSAC.
With five games left on the schedule, the next three occurring at home, the Warriors will look to climb back to .500 starting Saturday as they host Ottawa (AZ). The match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
