SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Warriors came out hot to start Tuesday night's match against The Master's University Mustangs (7-2. 5-2), but any run Jessup mustered was matched as they went on to lose in straight sets. With only three matches left on the season, the Warriors now hold a 3-8 overall record and are 1-6 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Head coach
Tiger Shelton liked the fight his team showed early, "The girls played with a tremendous amount of effort. Set one and two were back-and-forth then eventually unforced errors cost us." Shelton added, "The Masters is a tremendous team and is very well-coached. We look forward to learning from tonight and bouncing back tomorrow!"
Mallory Pazin got things going for Jessup with her first serve landing as an ace. The Mustangs then tied the set, but the Warriors took advantage of a side-out. With a hitting error by TMU coupled with a
Jasmine Pinon service ace and a successful kill by
Taylor Tarble, Jessup took a 5-1 lead.
The Mustangs, however, didn't waver and fought back to reclaim the lead, 7-6. From there, the set would be tied three times, but the Warriors weren't able to climb back, losing the set, 25-19.
Upon surrendering the first two points of the second set, the Warriors were able to tie things up three times. After breaking the third tie, the Mustangs appeared to be in control with a 17-12 lead. In a shift of momentum,
Shea DeJoseph was able to spark a run for Jessup after a thunderous kill.
Two more kills came in, one from
Ashanti Grayer on the outside and another from
Preslee Nunez standing tall in the middle. The jolt in momentum resulted in the match being tied, 17-17, and the Mustangs were forced to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, TMU took the lead, and the Warriors' valiant effort came up short as they lost, 25-22.
Set three got away from Jessup out of the gate, going down 7-0 to start. With no spark to ignite a run, the Warriors dropped the match in the final set, losing 25-9.
Taylor MacCuish had a team-high for Jessup with seven kills, and Pazin had double-digit assists with 11. As a team, the Warriors had seven service aces led by
Mary Padilla's two.
Madison Marlow led the defensive charge with 15 digs, and
Taylor Tarble,
Cloe Gunter, Nunez, and MacCuish all had two blocks.
These teams will be back on the court tomorrow afternoon, with the first serve scheduled for 1:30 P.M., and it can be live-streamed
