Warriors Shutout 4-0 in Penultimate Match of the GSAC Season

Firestorm strike for their first goal in just the fourth minute; conference season commences tomorrow in Surprise

GLENDALE, Ariz. – With just a duo of conference games remaining on the calendar for the Warriors, Jessup packed their bags and headed to the desert for their final road trip this season. Up first was the Arizona Christian Firestorm, and after starting the scoring early, things began to spiral as the Warriors fell 4-0.

The Firestorm started their scoring very early in the match, as Irene Ledezma beat Emma Whigam on the near post in just the fourth minute. Ten minutes later, Ledezma would assist ACU's second tally of the game as Adrianna Contreras found the net to push her side ahead 2-0.

"It was a very slow start in which we gave up two sloppy goals," said Head Coach David Nolan. "It took us 20 minutes, or so, to get into the game and create some decent looks. Unfortunately, we didn't take them."

Jessup's closest chance in the opening half came on a breakaway attempt by Madison Leonhardt. Making a great run into the box, Leonhardt saw a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper in front of her, but a diving stop thwarted any chance on goal and kept Jessup scoreless.

Arizona Christian pushed their lead to three in the 68th minute as Ledezma netted her second goal of the day, the seventh on the season.

Just over ten minutes from their third goal, the Firestorm tacked on the fourth and final tally of the day as Ledezma sent in a cross that was headed in goal by Veronica Cruz.

"We put a lot of pressure on them in the second half, but continued to miss our chances," added Nolan, who also noted that the 90-degree Arizona heat took a toll on the Warriors. "We picked up some injuries to key players and along with the het we got tired."

Whigam played 72 minutes in net for the Warriors, recording seven saves in the process. Madeline Jern came in as a replacement for the final 18 minutes of the match, recording one save in the process.

With the loss, Jessup's overall record on the season drops to 2-8-1. In conference play, after being awarded a victory via forfeit from Life Pacific, Jessup move to 1-5-1.

On finishing the season strong, Nolan stated, "We have one last GSAC game tomorrow so we can't dwell on today's result. We quickly turned out focus to OUAZ and want to make a statement tomorrow against the top team in the conference."

One conference match remains on the schedule for Jessup, as the Warriors stay in Arizona for a 10 a.m. kickoff tomorrow at Ottawa. Jessup has added an additional home match to the schedule. Following the OUAZ battle, Jessup ends the season at home against Humboldt State on April 9.
