LINCOLN, Calif. - The Warriors brought out the big bats on Friday afternoon as they continued the season against the San Diego Christian Hawks. On a day where the Warriors were the designated away team in their own ballpark, Jessup launched nine home runs and plated over 35 as they picked up two wins.
After the game, Head Coach
Trevor Paine noted that the weather Friday helped play a role in Jessup's offensive numbers, stating, "I always check the wind before each game. Today we had a southern wind, which meant it was blowing in a little bit, but it shifted a little bit and started blowing out. It was a good day to hit."
Game one was an offensive onslaught for Jessup, as the Warriors scored runs in every inning except for the first. Jessup would win the game 25-6, scoring the second-most runs in a single-game in Jessup Baseball history.
The Warriors flashed the bats through the use of the long ball as they hit six home runs, tying a single-game record.
Kevin Gutierrez,
Kevin Jordan Jr.,
Dustin McElwain, and
Josh Rauterkus all hit one while
Mike Shoenberger blasted two.
The home runs for McElwain and Rauterkus were the first of their collegiate careers. For Gutierrez and Rauterkus, both homers were grand slams.
Paine was ecstatic for his two freshmen hitting their first home runs, saying, "Awesome moment for them, it's something they will remember for the rest of their baseball career. I think everyone remembers their first college home run."
Having the biggest day at the dish in game one was Shoenberger. Finishing 3-for-5, Shoenberger drove in four runs and scored five. His two home runs tie a single-game Jessup record, and his five runs are a new single-game record.
The Warriors also had 48 total at-bats in the game, another new single-game record.
Game two was not as high-scoring as the opener Friday, but the Warriors still managed to plate double-digit runs as they won 11-4. Jessup would score runs in each of the last five innings in the seven-inning contest.
Continuing their strong days were Gutierrez and Jordan Jr., as Gutierrez launched his second home run of the day in the fifth. One batter later, Jordan Jr. sent a ball to center that got past the centerfielder, allowing him to race around the basepath for an inside-the-park homer.
The Hawks got out to an early lead in game two, leading 2-0 through two. After the Warriors tied the game in the fourth, SDCC answered with a solo homer to lead 3-2. From there, Jessup would score eight unanswered runs to pull away.
Jessup would add their ninth and final home run of the day in the top of the seventh when
Jordan Yu sent one over the left-field fence. It was his third of the season.
Earning the two wins Friday brings to an end a five-game losing skid for the Warriors. Their record on the season now sits at 10-6, 2-4 in GSAC.
Paine was happy to get back in the win column, adding, "It's always good to get wins. We're just happy to be back at McBean."
The Warriors and Hawks will hit the field again tomorrow for the closing doubleheader of this four-game set. Game time Saturday is set for 10 a.m.
