LINCOLN, Calif. – On a day that started by honoring 11 graduating seniors, the Warriors put on a show inside the lines of McBean Park with a senior day split of San Diego Christian. In two high-scoring battles, Jessup tied records as the schedule winds down to the season's final day.
Jessup got their scoring started early in game one, as after
Mike Shoenberger drove in the day's first run, senior
Max Modeste launched a two-run shot to right to make it 3-0. Another senior,
Mason Sherrill, hit a deep home run of his own in the second, this time a solo shot.
San Diego Christian tacked on two in the second, trailing 4-2 in the fourth they would plate five runs to take a 7-4 advantage. Another run in the fifth had Jessup down 8-4.
The Warriors pieced together their first comeback of the day in the fifth, as Modeste launched his second two-run homer of the day to trim the deficit to two. One batter later, senior
Jacob Gribbin homered over the batter's eye in centerfield, cutting SDCC's lead to one.
Later in the fifth, a strange turn of events gave Jessup the lead, as an errant throw on an infield single allowed two runs to score. Shoenberger and
Jordan Yu each recorded an RBI as well to set the score at 11-8.
The Hawks tied the game in the seventh on a two-run triple, following a solo home run in the sixth.
From there, it was all Warriors as
Kevin Jordan Jr., another senior, launched two home runs of his own in the final three innings. Gribbin and
Kawaiola Takemura would also pick up RBIs, giving the Warriors a 20-11 game one victory.
Jessup's six home runs in game one ties the program record for most in a single game, a mark the Warriors previously reached earlier this season against San Diego Christian as well.
On the power shown by the team's seniors, Head Coach
Trevor Paine stated, "That was very cool. I remember my senior day; I think everyone remembers their senior day or their last time playing and what they did. To create those memories they will cherish for the rest of their lives, it was great to see."
The Hawks jumped out quickly in game two, homering twice in the first inning. SDCC would tack on seven more runs by the end of the third inning, putting the Warriors in a 9-0 hole. The Warriors finally got on the board as
Kevin Gutierrez recorded an RBI groundout.
Jessup would score two more in the fourth to trim the Hawks' lead to 9-3, but SDCC proceeded to score seven unanswered runs to make it a 16-3 ballgame. Back-to-back Jessup doubles in the sixth plated a pair, but one more in the seventh for the Hawks put the score at its final, 17-5.
On the mentality going into tomorrow, Paine noted, "I told the guys after the game that if we can just come out here, enjoy our time out here tomorrow being able to play the game of baseball one last time as a team, I think good things will happen."
The Sunday split moves the Warriors to .500, 22-22 (13-17 GSAC). For San Diego Christian, entering game two 0-29 in GSAC play, the win was their first of the season.
Jessup will hit the field one last time tomorrow as the season closes with a doubleheader against the Hawks. First pitch of the finale is slated for 11 a.m.
