Warriors Score in the 90th Minute of Tuesday’s 5-1 Loss at CSUMB

Freshman Diego Nunez scores the first goal of his collegiate career; Warriors return home to play Sierra Nevada on Friday

SEASIDE, Calif. – Continuing with their challenging preseason schedule, the Warriors traveled to the coast on Tuesday to take on the Otters of CSU Monterey Bay. In taking on their first opponent from the NCAA ranks this season, the Warriors could not combat the attack of CSUMB, as the Otters took the match 5-1.

Jessup goalkeepers were put to work Tuesday, as both Robert Sams and Valentin Luna split action in goal. Sams recorded three saves in the opening half, while Luna recorded six during his 45 minutes of action.

The Otters struck first just over three minutes in as Adrian Rebollar converted on a penalty kick after a foul called on Rahil Shankar. CSUMB made it 2-0 just four minutes later as Pedro Hernandez scored off an assist from Javier Romero.

After the match, Head Coach Greg Lazaga said that the " we need to be better. In the first ten minutes, we need to be better."

CSUMB took a 3-0 advantage into the halftime break thanks to a 42nd-minute goal by Adrian Ortiz.

Jessup's best opportunity at goal in the opening half came just seconds before the third CSUMB goal, as Paolo Ionescu narrowly missed left on a 20-yard free-kick. The ensuing Otter goal came on a counterattack up the field.

CSUMB made it a 4-0 advantage with a 69th-minute goal from Marcus Decouto, assisted by Rebollar. Steven Moreno would score the Otter's fifth goal of the match with less than three minutes remaining.

Lazaga later added that "Monterey Bay came out ready and we were not up to speed.  These are hard lessons only learned by fire for a young team.  We are going thru it right now and need to turn it around together."

Even with the clock showing just a few minutes to play, the Warriors did not quit. With less than 60 seconds to play, freshman Diego Nunez collected the ball near the top of the box off an Angelo Chavez pass, cut left, then cut right, and placed a perfect ball past the goalkeeper for the goal.

It is the first goal of his collegiate career for Nunez, as he is playing in just his second match of the season.

Tuesday's loss drops the Warriors to 1-4 on the campaign. Jessup will return to their home field on Friday as they welcome Sierra Nevada University. Friday's match is scheduled for 3 p.m.
