ROCKLIN, Calif. – In the final home match of Jessup's non-conference schedule, the Warriors' fitness was put to the test in a 102-minute battle with Simpson University. Looking for a needed win, the golden goal was not there for Jessup as they fall to 1-5-0 on the young season.
On the 2-1 outcome, head coach
Greg Lazaga stated it was a "disappointing result at the end after some of the early fluid play we saw on our side. We fell into a slow manner of play in the second half that wasn't good enough."
After a scoreless draw entering halftime, Jessup finally got on the board in the 51st minute Monday as freshman
Paolo Ionescu beat the keeper on a one-on-one opportunity. The goal was set up by a phenomenal over-the-top ball sent from
Jose Ayala in the backline.
The second-half lead would not hold for long as four minutes later, Joel Sterling headed the ball into the net off a Simpson corner kick.
Robert Sams started Monday's match in goal and recorded three saves in the first half. Jessup turned to
Juan Negrete in the second half, and he would tally his first collegiate save during his 45-minutes of action.
Through 90-minutes, Monday's match sat tied, sending the contest to overtime. Sams returned as Jessup's goaltender and held Simpson scoreless in the first 10-minutes. Jessup's best shot at goal came on a volleyed attempt from
Elias Orocio that missed left.
Into the second overtime, Christian Mesa of the Red Hawks played a leading ball on the ground to Austin Miller on the box. Miller collected the pass and placed a shot past the reach of Sams for the winner.
Lazaga later added, "We need to be sharper in our connections, quicker in our decisions, and more dynamic in our movement. Tough one to lose. We have to continue to push through, and we have another opportunity on Wednesday."
Jessup will look to get back on track Wednesday as the season continues with a road match at San Francisco State. The contest will be the final non-conference match of the year as Jessup opens the GSAC season on Sept. 30.
