SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The past five matches for the Warriors have been smooth sailing, thanks to a plus-18 goal advantage and a five-match win streak. On Monday, the Warriors were finally put to the test, needing late in both regulation and overtime in a highly-competitive battle at UC Santa Cruz.
On the match, head coach
David Nolan stated, "We showed fantastic character to not give up. We piled the pressure on the second half and got the rewards."
For the first time since their Aug. 27 loss at UC Merced, Jessup found themselves trailing in a match on Monday after the Banana Slugs scored in just the sixth minute. Payton Cichowski scored off an assist from Sophia Makarem, setting the score at 1-0.
The 1-0 advantage was held for the next 80-minutes of soccer, making any chance of a comeback to extend the win streak seem bleak.
Jessup was able to fire off shots throughout Monday's match, but through 87-minutes, only one had gone on goal.
Kaylee Gillespie continued to be the attacker pushing the opponent on their heels as her five shots led the match.
With just three minutes remaining on the clock, Jessup finally received the answer they needed thanks to
Lauren (McDougal) Case. Case received the ball from
Hannah Olariu, setting up the equalizer that eventually pushed the match to overtime.
After no score in the first overtime period, the match moved to double overtime where either a goal would end the match or the teams would tie.
Jessup wasted no time, needing just 13 seconds for
Kye Johnson to win the game off an assist from
Macey Moen, extending the win streak to six.
Nolan spoke highly of Johnson's performance, adding, "Kye was fantastic today, constantly moving and finally got the reward with the winning goal."
The six consecutive wins are the most in a row for Jessup Women's Soccer since they opened the 2015 season 7-0.
Through eight matches, Jessup is now 6-2.
One final non-conference match remains on the schedule for the Warriors, and it will occur on home turf as Jessup welcomes Mills College on Friday. Following Friday, Jessup will get a week off before hitting the road for Arizona to begin GSAC play next Thursday, Sept. 30.
