ROCKLIN, Calif. – Plenty of highlight moments were to be found Saturday on Warrior Field. In their second GSAC contest of the year, Jessup needed every second of their match against Life Pacific, as in the end, the Warriors pulled off the buzzer-beating win.
Both sides sat deadlocked in the waning moments of the match as the two teams pushed desperately for a win. However, what proved to be the deciding moment was a foul called against Life Pacific with just a minute to go.
Javier Villa played the ball across the field that would be headed to Donovan Carillo, setting up a cross into the box. Carillo whipped one with his left foot, sending LPU's keeper out to collect the ball. Instead, it skipped through his hands to
Angelo Chavez on the far post, who
one-timed it off the post and into the goal, sending the Warriors into a frenzy.
"Thrilling game for us to end on today with the goal for Angelo," said head coach
Greg Lazaga. "Right place and the right time for him. Great reward for him with all the work he is putting in. It had been coming for a while as we were putting pressure on goal, and finally, one went thru."
Chavez's goal was not the only highlight moment of the day, as Jessup's first goal was also one to remember.
Occurring in the 68th minute, also after an LPU foul, freshman
Augustine Chulu stepped up to take a free kick 19 yards out. Chulu struck the ball with his left leg, curling it over the wall and
past the diving reach of the goalkeeper.
Life Pacific was first on the board with a goal in the 31st minute. Jessup had a chance to even the match in the first half when they were awarded a penalty kick, but
Marcus Tovar's attempt was saved.
Jessup was kept in the match due predominantly to exceptional play by their goalkeeper
Gerardo Perez Plata. Perez-Plata made exceptional save after exceptional save, ending the day with six. He sits second in the GSAC with 36 saves.
"(Gerardo) was fantastic in goal again and managing the game," added Lazaga. "He is a special talent."
The Warriors, now 1-1-0 in the GSAC, will be back in action next week at Vanguard and San Diego Christian.
