COSTA MESA, Calif. – Less than a week removed from a 90th-minute victory, the Warriors got back to work on Thursday against Vanguard University. Looking to start the road trip on a high note, it was another late goal that sealed Jessup's fate, this time not in their favor.
Deadlocked at zero 84 minutes into the match, the first tally of the day finally came for the Lions. Taking a pass from Andrew Robles after a cross from Stewart Alvayero, Robert Ronco put his side on the board with his third goal of the season.
"Today was a tough loss," said coach
Greg Lazaga. "We played well for large parts, connecting and breaking lines. We gave ourselves some chances at net early on. The energy and effort were both there."
The goal came against Jessup's goalkeeper
Gerardo Perez Plata. Perez-Plata played all 90 minutes, recording six saves in the loss.
Jessup got off seven shots in this match, with only three coming on goal.
Augustine Chulu,
Isaac Morfin, and
Marcus Tovar all registered an attack on target.
The bulk of the attacking in this one came from the home-standing Lions. While they only managed to score the one goal, Vanguard did rip off 20 shots with seven going on goal.
Lazaga noted that his team will learn from days like today and will react differently as they gain experience. "We just need a little bit of maturity to close out games when they are tight. Some important plays near the end that we will learn from. We will stay focused and come back better for it."
Jessup moves to 4-4-2 overall on the season. They now sit at 1-2-0 within the conference. The Warriors currently sit seventh in the conference, with OUAZ leading at 2-0-0.
The Warriors will have a chance to climb up the standings on Saturday when they take on the team directly ahead of them in the GSAC, San Diego Christian. The match from Temecula is slated for 1:30 p.m.
