Grigsby’s Two Goal Day Highlights a Senior Day Win

Jessup honored five players in their final match on Warrior Field; The Warriors sit two points shy of the final postseason spot

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Taking the field one final time this season in front of their home fans, the Warriors looked to get the bad taste of Thursday's loss out of their mouths. Taking on Arizona Christian, Jessup made it a Senior Day to remember as they picked up their first GSAC win of the season.

Before Saturday's match, Jessup honored the five seniors playing in their final game on Warrior Field. Those seniors were Clarissa Holguin, Krystal Lombera, Natalia Seuthe, Sarah Stralen, and Nadia Vazquez.

"Winning always feels good, especially when you play well," said head coach Amsalu Fantahun. "I'm really happy for the seniors. They celebrated their Senior Day, and to celebrate like that with the victory, it's a happy moment also for all the players who have been working really hard."

Jessup's offensive efforts were sparked by sophomore Aaliyah Grigsby, whose two-goal performance led the Warriors to a 2-1 victory.

Grigsby's first goal of the day came in the 31st minute when Arizona Christian's keeper raced out of the box to clear the ball, leaving the goal open. Kennah Shaffer beat the keeper to the ball, setting up a pass to Grigsby for the curling goal 18 yards out.

Her second tally came after a long over-the-top ball from Hannah Olariu in the 80th minute, creating a one-on-one chance that Grigsby capitalized on.

"She's been doing great, and she has been improving a lot," added Fantahun on Grigsby. "The thing is now we have a very great player in (Kaylee Gillespie), and everyone defends her. So that's leaving our other two or three players open. So today, we figured that out and took advantage of it."

The Warriors now sit on four points in the GSAC, two points shy of Hope International for the final spot in the postseason. Jessup will have two chances to earn points and climb the table next week.

"My main goal now is on Westmont," said Fantahun. "I do have a plan with them, we'll just keep practicing, and our main focus on Monday and Tuesday will be preparing for Westmont."

The Warriors will be in Santa Barbara to take on Westmont on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
