TEMECULA, Calif. – Jessup got back on the field Saturday, looking to avenge a 1-0 loss they took on Thursday in Costa Mesa. It looked to be going Jessup's way against San Diego Christian until a late goal evened the score, sending Jessup home with a draw.
GSAC soccer operates on a point system, with wins earning three points and a draw being one. Jessup has totaled one win and one draw this conference season, putting them at four points.
Both sides sat scoreless at the end of the first half, with San Diego Christian leading the shot chart 13-4 at the break. Of those 13 chances for the Hawks, five went on goal against Jessup's keeper
Gerardo Perez Plata.
The Warriors were outshot 23-6 on Saturday, but it looked as if one of Jessup's three shots on goal would be all they would need.
Isaac Morfin put the Warriors on top in the 55th minute when he took a pass from
Angelo Chavez, setting up the game's first tally. The score held for the next half hour, and at times looked like it would be the only score, but SDCC finally knotted things up in the 87th minute thanks to Gabriel Willadsen.
There would be no heroic goal in the final three minutes, as both sides walked away tied.
"Unfortunate ending for us to let one in on the far side of goal at the end," said head coach
Greg Lazaga. "We really connected well for a 75-minute stretch. We continue to improve in combination play higher up the field. We had several breakthrough moments that could have sealed the game for us and just couldn't make the final play."
Perez-Plata played all 90 minutes on Saturday, finishing with nine saves.
Lazaga also offered praise to junior
Donovan Carrillo, noting, "I thought Donny was an impactful player all game. Defensively he held his side down and was able to get us going forward as well. High-level performance from him."
Jessup's road trip continues next week when they take the road two more times, beginning with a Wednesday date at UC Santa Cruz. Jessup then takes on Menlo College on Saturday.
