ROCKLIN, Calif. – For the second week in a row, and third time this season, Jessup's
Marina Gonzalez has been voted the GSAC Attacker of the Week. The honors come after a record setting weekend by Gonzalez and her team.
"Marina was our GOAT award winner once again," said head coach
Tiger Shelton. The GOAT award is given out weekly by the coaching staff, and it recognizes efforts both on and off the court.
Shelton has praised Gonzalez's leadership throughout the season, adding, "it really helps to have someone like Marina on the team who's a fifth-year senior who helps make things work."
Needing two wins to secure the 2-seed and a first-round bye in the GSAC Tournament, the Warriors took down The Master's in four sets on Friday. Jessup then came back from a 2-0 hole to reverse sweep Westmont, giving the Warriors its first victory ever against their rivals from Santa Barbara.
In Friday night's victory, Gonzalez tied
Taylor Dilley's single-match record with 24 kills. She ended the match on a hot streak, recording eight kills in Jessup's 25-13 win in the final set.
Less than 24 hours later, Gonzalez finished with 18 kills as the Warriors climbed back down two sets for the second time in eight days. Her weekend totals of 42 kills played an integral part in Jessup's team success down the final stretch of the season.
The Warriors have been one of the hottest teams in the nation as of late, winning 11 of their last 12 matches.
Jessup ended the regular season 12-6 within the conference, setting a new record for the most GSAC wins in program history. By earning the first-round bye, Jessup also clinches its first trip to the GSAC semifinals.
Who the Warriors take on in the GSAC Tournament remains to be determined, as they will play the winner of the match between The Master's and Vanguard. Jessup's semifinal match will take place Friday night at 6 p.m. (PST) from OUAZ in Surprise, Ariz.
