ROCKLIN, Calif. – Fresh off back-to-back wins in the GSAC, the Warriors welcomed Menlo to Rocklin on Saturday, looking to get another GSAC win. In a game that had a flair for the dramatics, Jessup clawed back from an early hole to force overtime, setting up a thrilling three-point victory.
The highlight moment of the night seemed to be in the final seconds of the first half, as the Warriors set up an inbound play with 0.9 seconds left.
King Calhoun found
Jayden DeJoseph, who spun and heaved up a prayer at the horn that found nothing but net.
But that would ultimately go down as a footnote in this one, as again, DeJoseph wore the hero's cape, sinking the game-winning triple with three seconds remaining in overtime.
On the final play, head coach
Lance Von Vogt said, "I trust all the guys on the floor, but (DeJoseph) is a fifth-year senior, and he has the ability to knock down big shots. He was having a great night. The ball looked really good coming off his hands. So yeah, calling his number on that play was very easy for me."
DeJoseph ended the night scoring 19 on 5-of-7 from three.
But how the Warriors got to overtime did not come without a fight. Menlo led 47-71 at halftime and held a lead of 12 midway through the first half. The bucket by DeJoseph to end the first half, says Von Vogt, gave the Warriors a needed boost.
"The shot at the end of the first half was huge because Menlo had been on an 8-0 run to get up 11. And then we finished on a 5-0 run, closing with five points in the final ten minutes."
Seeming to put the game on his back in the second half for the second outing in a row was
Myles Corey. Corey scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, five of them coming from the charity stripe. Corey and his All-American partner in the backcourt,
Cashemin Williams, combined for 40 percent of Jessup's scoring Saturday night.
Williams led all players with 20 points, adding seven assists and five boards.
Menlo led by seven with 1:57 remaining in regulation, but big-time scoring from Corey and
Jordan Adams sparked a 10-3 run to even the score. Adams converted a three-point play to draw within two and then hit a three on the next possession to close within two again. Corey's driving layup with nine seconds was the basket that clinched overtime.
On Corey's performance, Von Vogt added, "I think once Myles gets a feel for the game, the pace and the feel of the game, then he starts to settle in. I'm looking for him to put a 40-minute game together because that's when he's going to be special, and I think he's knocking on the door of that."
Jessup hits the road next week, taking on the California Maritime Academy Tuesday in Vallejo. It will be Jessup's last game before taking 16 days off.
"We're gonna take a big break for Christmas, I think we're off for 16 days, and I'm super happy with where we're at," added Von Vogt, who will not play another GSAC game until January 5. "For us to be 4-1, with the number of guys that we've had out due to injury, it shows the heart and character of this team."
The Warriors return to Warrior Arena on December 29 to host Simpson.
