Warriors Fight Off Maritime’s Comeback Bid to Win Fourth Straight

Williams scores a game-leading 29 points; Jessup will next take the court in 16 days when Simpson visits Warrior Arena

VALLEJO, Calif. – Coming off three straight in their home gym, the Warriors made the 80-mile trek westbound on I-80 Tuesday to take on an old foe from the Cal Pac, the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers. Coming off three consecutive victories, Jessup pushed their streak to four as they took down CMA, 75-71.

The Warriors and Keelhaulers are no strangers to one another. Both programs saw one another twice a year before Jessup transitioned to the GSAC in 2014. Tuesday was the 34th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Jessup leaving victorious in 21 of those meetings.

On his team's performance Tuesday night, head coach Lance Von Vogt said postgame, "We did what we needed to do tonight. We came out here and knew that Cal Maritime was going to be gritty, and tough, and physical, and that they were gonna play hard. So that's what we prepared for, and we rose to the occasion on the road against a good team that's tied for first in their league."

Cashemin Williams led the Warriors in scoring, dropping 29 points on 5-of-6 from three. Williams added four rebounds and an assist to his stat line. Tuesday's performance pushes his season scoring average up to 20.7 PPG.

With the victory, Jessup moves to 9-5 overall on the campaign.

The long ball was falling for the Warriors in the opening half. Jessup knocked down six triples in the first 20 minutes, four coming from Williams. The Warriors shot a 47 percent clip in Tuesday's opening half, paired with a 100 percent showing at the charity stripe.

Jessup's largest lead of the first half came with under seven minutes to play as a 10-1 put them ahead 29-19. The Keelhaulers clawed within three, but a Williams bucket at the horn sent the Warriors into the locker room leading by six.

CMA climbed back into the game in the second half, taking a 43-42 lead thanks to a 9-2 run out of the break. There would be three ties over the first 15 minutes of the second half, as neither team could pull away by more than four.

Jessup got some breathing room with 1:33 to play as Jayden DeJoseph sunk a triple to put his side ahead by eight, but back came the Keelhaulers. CMA got within two in the final seconds, but with time against them, they were forced to foul, sending Myles Corey to the line to sink two and eliminate the possibility of overtime.

Corey ended the night scoring 18 points, 12 of those coming in the second half. Charlie Garrison recorded another double-double, scoring 15 to pair with 11 rebounds. All 75 of Jessup's points Tuesday came from their starting five.

On his bench not scoring, Von Vogt added, "It was an off night tonight. I think if you look through the box scores, our bench has done a really good job. Tonight our bench did not have a great game, but our starters stepped up and held the rope for them. But we expect to have one of the strongest benches in the country, and tonight was an off night for them."

The Warriors will now get 16 days off before they take the court next against Simpson. During this time off, Von Vogt hopes to get his squad healthy and possibly return some key pieces of the puzzle that have been out of action.

"We should have three guys that we think can play a critical role for us that are coming off of injury or will become eligible before our next game," said Von Vogt. "Their hard work in practice is gonna play off when they have the chance to get on the floor."

Jessup's December 29 matchup with the Red Hawks is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the final home game of 2022 are on sale HERE.
