LINCOLN, Calif. – The sour taste of losing a series lingers until the next time you step on the diamond, and for the Warriors, that meant six days of angst. Back on the field today, Jessup took their frustrations out on the baseball, producing big hit after big hit, sweeping the doubleheader with the Bushnell Beacons.
Bushnell comes into 2022 as a first-year program, making Friday's contests the first-ever between these two schools on the ball field.
The Warriors were sparked in game one by a great showing from their starting pitcher,
Danny Chavez. Chavez tossed a gem over five innings in which he allowed just one run on three hits and five strikeouts.
"Danny was spinning it really good as always," said head coach
Trevor Paine. "You always know what you're going to get with him. He's Mr. Reliable. He's going to give you five, six innings. He's going to keep you in games. He's going to make pitches when he has to make pitches, and that's what he did today, and that's what he's done for the most part for the last two years."
Also propelling the Warriors was the long ball.
Nicholas Hadd hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left that had the Warriors leading 10-1 at the time.
Jaisten Cabatbat then countered Hadd with a two-run shot of his own, this time off the left-field foul pole.
Dylan Cole was masterful at the plate all day, finishing 2-for-4 with two triples and two runs scored.
The Warriors put up eight runs in the third inning of game one, followed by four runs in the fourth. Jessup would take the opener, 15-4.
Game two saw the Beacons strike first with two runs in the second, but Jessup quickly fought back, tacking on five in the bottom half and three in the third to blow the game wide open.
Cabatbat struck again in the second inning rally, blasting his second homer of the day, this time another two-run shot.
Kawaiola Takemura then joined the party, hitting his first home run of the year, a three-run shot to left-center.
"(Jaisten) has been really good all season," added Paine. "He has done a really good job of understanding his role in the offense. And that role is growing into a bomber a little bit. He hit two balls out of the yard today, which he doesn't do often. The second one was a big fly."
Jessup hit four home runs on the day and finished with nine extra-base hits as they won the Friday finale, 10-6.
Isaiah Rodriguez earned the win in game two after tossing two innings in relief.
Shawn Roberts picked up his second save of the season.
"It's obviously good string two wins together and to get the offense going a little bit," Paine added on the day. "A lot of guys who had been scuffling a little bit had good days and hit balls hard, so that was encouraging to see. We always pride ourselves on being a team that can score runs, and last week the runs were hard to come by."
The Warriors and Beacons will take the field again tomorrow for games three and four of this four-game series. It's the final home games for Jessup before they start GSAC play next weekend in Arizona at OUAZ.
