Smith Takes First Singles Victory at UC Santa Cruz

Sam Smith becomes the second men’s tennis player to win a singles match, joining Kaydin Silva

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Back on the courts were the Warriors on Friday, taking a road trip to the beaches of Santa Cruz. The season continued with a contest against the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, and just like the previous times the Warriors stepped between the lines, Jessup showed growth and improvement by a young program.

In the men's competition, playing in the one position was Sam Smith. After losing the first set 6-3, Smith bounced back in the second to force a tiebreaker thanks to a 6-4 win. Smith battled to win the tiebreaker as well, 10-8, winning his first singles match with the Warriors.

Also competing in singles play for the Jessup men was Noah Moeckelmann (1-6, 1-6), Aidan Sauer (0-6, 0-6), and Jordan Lenney (2-6, 1-6).

Over to doubles play, Smith and Lenney teamed up and battled before dropping their one-set match 8-6. The duo of Moekelmann and Sauer lost 8-0.

In the women's competition, doubles play saw Aysha Hayes and Sydney Page team up in the one spot. The duo put up a battle before dropping their bout 8-6. Also, putting up a fight was the duo of Nicollet Alexander and Danielle Akabane, as they narrowly lost 8-6 as well.

Singles play saw Hayes (1-6, 1-6), Alexander (5-7, 2-6), Page (2-6, 0-6), Akabane (2-6, 6-7), and McKenzie Hawkins, (3-6, 3-6) all in action.

There will be no rest for the Warriors as they must quickly make their way to Southern California. Jessup will be in Whittier tomorrow, taking on Whittier College.

The next home contest on the schedule comes on February 26, when Westmont College comes to town for the first conference match of the season.
