LINCOLN, Calif. – The Warriors woke up on Saturday with ambitions of a series win, and after one game, it looked like it might happen. But after a high-scoring end to the day, Jessup will once again have to settle for a split at the end of a four-game set.
Both pitching staffs had their hands full in game one, frequently dealing with runners on base. Jessup collected 13 hits, and UBC had 12.
Game one went to extra innings as it was
Jorge Perez who played the hero, winning the game with a walk-off single after
Kevin Gutierrez tripled to start the inning.
Jessup scored four runs in the sixth inning. The offensive firepower by William Jessup University was led by Gutierrez and
Dustin McElwain, all driving in runs in the frame.
UBC scored four runs in the seventh inning. The offensive onslaught by the Thunderbirds was led by Nathan Shute, Nolan Weger, and Brett Corbeth, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
Caleb Markwith earned the victory on the hill for the Warriors. The right-hander lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four and walking one.
Isaiah Rodriguez and
James Courshon entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Graham Seltzer took the loss for the University of British Columbia. The pitcher lasted one inning, allowing five hits and two runs while walking zero.
Game two saw the Warriors stay in it until the end, but UBC pulled away late in a 13-8 victory on Saturday. The Thunderbirds were down 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning when Mike Fitzsimmons homered on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.
Joseph Hayden collected four hits in defeat. Hayden doubled in the second, homered in the third, doubled in the fifth, and singled in the seventh.
Jessup opened up an early lead in the second inning when
Dylan Cole drew a walk, scoring one run.
Shane Laforest earned the win for UBC. The righty surrendered four runs on four hits over four innings, striking out four. Branden Woods threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Max Moreno took the loss for the Warriors. The lefty lasted five innings, allowing six hits and nine runs while striking out six.
The Warriors will be back on the diamond next weekend when Westmont College comes to McBean Park.
