LINCOLN, Calif. – The day did not start the way the Warriors wanted, but when the last swing of the bat is a walk-off home run, it's easy to go home happy. That's the story of the day for Jessup as the split day one of a four-game series with the Oregon Tech Owls.
The ending moments of the day saw a comeback for the ages, as the Warriors entered the final inning of game two trailing 6-3. Thanks to a two-out error, allowing a run to score and the inning to continue, the Warriors got a chance at victory with the winning run stepping into the batter's box.
Centerfielder
Kevin Gutierrez wasted no time at this opportunity, launching a three-run homer over the left field fence, leading to a mob at home plate and a bucket of ice water being dumped on his head.
The 7-6 victory also saw big moments at the plate from
Dylan Cole. Cole was a menace at the plate all day, combining for three hits, two doubles, and five RBI.
Game one saw the Warriors strike an early lead thanks to Gutierrez's first-inning sacrifice fly, plating
Nicholas Hadd who reached via a walk. Walks were going to have to suffice for the Warriors, as baserunners were hard to come by, with Jessup totaling just three hits.
OIT took the lead in the sixth when they plated four runs. A run in the seventh, followed by five in the eighth, saw them push their way to a 10-1 victory.
Shortstop Dalton Daily was a thorn in the Warriors' side all game as he jacked two home runs in his team's winning effort.
Right-hander
Danny Chavez looked good in game one, tossing five innings of shutout baseball. Chavez gets a no-decision for his efforts. The Jessup bullpen combined for 10 earned runs over four innings of work.
The Warriors only had to ask their bullpen to toss two innings in relief in the final game of the day.
Shion Matsushita earns the win after a shutout seventh inning.
Friday's split sets up a chance for the Warriors to win their third consecutive series to start the season. The Warriors currently sit at 5-2, with two games to go tomorrow against this same Owls squad.
The series finale gets underway at 11 a.m. from McBean Park. The Warriors will stay at McBean next weekend as another school from Oregon, Bushnell University, heads to Lincoln for a four-game set.
