ROSEVILLE, Calif. – It's a historic day for Jessup Athletics as the 16th varsity sport official began competition. Taking on Holy Names University, the men's and women's tennis programs began their 2022 campaign over at Lifetime Fitness.
In perhaps the milestone moment of the day, two-sport athlete Kaydin Silva etched his name into the history books by winning his singles match in a tiebreaker. It's the first win for the program, and it comes on day one.
Sam Smith battled tooth-and-nail in his bout, dropping in two narrow sets (7-5, 6-4). Others competing in single's competition were
Noah Moeckelmann and
Aidan Sauer.
In double's play, the tandem of Smith and Silva lost their match 6-1.
Jordan Lenney teamed up with Moeckelmann, and the pair dropped theirs 6-2.
Over to the women's action, now in year four as a program, the Warriors looked competitive in each of their matches.
Aysha Hayes played in the one position and dropped her singles bout in straight sets.
Nicollet Alexander stepped up to the two-position, losing 6-1, 6-2 in her match. Also competing in singles play was McKenzie Hawks and
Danielle Akabane.
On the play of the Jessup women, head coach
Chris Tolson stated, "The ladies got off to a fast start winning the doubles point.
Aysha Hayes and
Nicollet Alexander dominated the net. It was good to see the aggressive play."
Double's action saw Hawkins team up with Akabane for the lone match of the day.
At the end of competition, Holy Names took the men's bout 4-2 and the women's contest 4-3.
The Jessup women will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Dominican at 2 p.m. The Jessup men will not hit the court again until they visit UC Santa Cruz on February 11.
