FULLERTON, Calif. – Jessup hit the road this weekend as the GSAC schedule set up shop in Fullerton this weekend. Taking on the Hope International Royals, Jessup battled in game one before ultimately ending the day on the wrong end of a two-game split.
The big bat of
Joseph Hayden was on display in game one. Hayden started Jessup's scoring in the second inning with a solo home run. He was not done leaving the ballpark as he sent his second homer of the wall, another solo shot, in the top of the sixth.
Danny Chavez for the starting nod in game one and looked good yet again. Chavez retired ten in a row over the middle innings before giving up a five-run inning in the fifth. The right-hander lasted 6 innings, allowing 6 runs (3 earned) and 6 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.
The Warriors took a 3-1 lead in game one thanks to a solo shot from
Jorge Perez, but the lead was short-lived as the five-run inning for the Royals had them leading 6-3.
Jessup put together a rally in the seventh, starting with Hayden's second homer of the day, as they worked to tie the game at six. The game went to the bottom of the ninth, where an error allowed the winning run to score, as Hope took the opener 7-6.
Game two saw the Warriors again get on the board in the second courtesy of the long ball, this time a solo shot from
Logan Coe. It was one of only two runs Jessup would score, as they managed to push a run across on a walk in the fourth.
Hope struck first with two in the first, followed by a four-run inning in the second. Four more runs would cross home in the later innings as the Royals took game two, 10-2.
Christian Winston got the nod in game two. He tossed 3.1 innings while allowing 6 runs (5 earned) and 8 hits. He struck out 3.
Chase Marcoe worked 2.2 innings in relief.
The Warriors drop to a game below .500 on the season, 13-14, with the loss. Hope, who entered No. 16 in the country, moves to 21-5.
Jessup and Hope International will return to the diamond tomorrow in Fullerton as the series will wrap up with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
