Jessup Sweeps San Diego Christian to Pick Up Series Win

Cabatbat and Takemura seal game one with late inning RBIs; Moreno tosses a complete game in game two

LINCOLN, Calif. – Stormy skies couldn't keep Jessup from playing baseball on Saturday, as it hosted San Diego Christian for a doubleheader to wrap up the four-game weekend series. The Warriors used some late inning heroics in game one before coasting to a victory in game two to sweep the day and take the weekend series three games to one.

"After game two yesterday it would have been very easy to come out today feeling sorry for ourselves and still thinking about it," said head coach Trevor Paine. "But to come out and play two good baseball games and win two games? It's definitely something we can build off of and carry into a good week of practice and come out next weekend ready to play."

Jessup found itself in a pitcher's duel in the first nine innings of the day, as the Warriors rallied late for a 3-2 victory.

The Hawks drew first blood in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Jorge Perez tied it with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. San Diego Christian regained the lead int the fifth with an Aaron Hoch's second RBI single of the game.

The fireworks came in the bottom of the eighth for the Warriors, as Kawaiola Takemura and Jaisten Cabatbat each brought a run home to give them the lead. Marlin Brucato closed the door on the Hawks, earning the save by retiring all three batters in the ninth.

Starter Kristian Hernandez had a strong outing, throwing six innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits. James Courshon earned the win in relief, entering the game in the seventh and pitching two innings. The southpaw didn't allow any runs on one hit with a strikeout.

"I liked just the way we were able to execute in situations where we needed a pitcher to make a pitch or to make a play and we made those plays, we made those pitches," said Paine "We all knew it was gonna be a tough day to hit, but just preached to the guys before the game on doing all the little things to score run, executing well running the bases."

Jessup surrendered a run in the top of the first in game two as well, but the Warriors took the lead in the bottom of the second and never gave it up for a 5-1 victory.

Max Moreno was the story of the day for Jessup, pitching a complete seven innings in game two. Moreno allowed just one run on six hits and one walk while sending four Hawks packing on strikes.

"It was the kind of outing we've been waiting for Max to have," said Paine."He had three pitches to work with and he competed. He made pitches when you need to make pitches and he was just confident out there."

Jessup will have some time off before traveling down to Santa Clarita next weekend for a four game series at The Master's University. That series is scheduled to begin on March 25 with first pitch scheduled for 11 AM.
